Thanks for posting this. When patents expire it takes the chains off of programmers.
Some of the worst patents for programmers were the infamous Unisys LZW patent (they stole it from existing academic research), and the software activation patent which an Australian dude used to extort vast sums of money from Microsoft, Adobe, and many others. Both of the forementioned patents are expired.

Yes, but the last sentence acknowledges the expiration from the MPEG LA (the group that had lawyers enforcing it):
"Please note that the last US patent expired February 13, 2018, and patents remain active in Philippines and Malaysia after that date."
