Radar what you saw (it was used to fill time due to the game) was a Filminuto , basically a 1 min film (cartoon) that without language tells a funny story, some of them based on the then popular funny stories that people joke about in the street. They are made and directed by Juan Padrón known as the best cuban cartoonist since Cuban TV started in 1950 just few years after US. The cartoon Vampires in Havana created by him (it has 1 secuel) in my opinion the funniest ever (being a cuban cartoon is about the USA vampires fighting against the european Vampires to obtain the formula of Vampisol , a drink created by a cuban scientist vampire that would make a Vampire inmune to light therefore they could enjoy the Cuban sun in their beaches)

I dont know if you have seen The Dummiers, made in West Germany, basically the same as what you saw but only related to sports (the javalinist who throws the javalin just a few inches and even the refeerees meassure it because it was a valid throw, lol). This ones Tele Rebelde used to show them 1 at a time during major sporting events coverage like Olympics and so. I always laughed with does German's cartoons , they had no speech as well, so language is not an issue.

The Benny hill show was also very popular several years ago when I was a kid , but have never heard of Monty Pyton. US made on Cuban TV I remember series like Flipper, another about a homeless dog (I think british) and the australian Skippie were my favourites from the late 70 early 80's. And of course the Walt Disney cartoons or the ones from Hanna-Barbera but those were limited to only tuesdays, thursdays and sundays mornings i think lol and of course if you behaved well with good grades otherwise as we adults still use to joke, the kid would be punished to watch only russian made cartoons the rest of the week days , lol.

:) So wonderfully interesting, HD! It is "cool". I am surprised that you are not familiar with Monty Python, though. I virtually grew up on a lot of that comedy (and the Goodies and Benny Hill). Google some of Monty Python's stuff, it's all over the place. Even major movies. The best skits from "Monty Python's Flying Circus" for me were... "The Dead Parrot", and "I'm A Lumberjack". The lumberjack wasn't really a Monty Python original, but one of the members of MP (Eric Idle) was given credit for it. It is hilarious!

You have to appreciate British humor to get the laughs out of it, though. I enjoy most of it, but not everyone does.

The best movies from MP were Monty Python and the Holy Graile and The History of the World According to Garp, The Life of Brian... ETC.

And now, for something completely different... :) A Man with... (fill in the blank)!

well I was in Cuba so do not be surprised lol. I just saw it on the net and I do not remember that comedy group. from britain I remember watching the classic Mr Bean though and here on PBS some other 5 pm shows . keep in mind now is different but at the time it was only 2 channels and only for a few hours after 6 pm and on top of that Castro used to talk for 3 hours and even after he finished they will repeat it according to them because they say of a lot of people asking to see it again and just a few had phones and getting a dial tone was like hitting the lottery lol. Unbeleivable, as I always say , Cubavision is very nice to watch sometimes, but away from Cuba, lol.

Radar,
Check out my thread on getting Hispat at 30 west on a 500 dish. When I go down by the bay to try and get some of the Atlantic Birds, I usally lock on to 30 west Cuban stations as a reference. From there I try and get all of the KU birds east of 30. The next sat is 15 west - KU I get it OK after that it is hit and miss on the sats east of that.

I remember your post, Mike. Very good reception! Weren't you the one that had the kicking van for your trips to the bay? The van that I wanted to buy! Still got my eye on that van!

Your correct, I'm in the market for a new one. I will be looking at a couple this coming week, the dealer is in PA around an hours drive from where I live.

The van has built in external generator and battery and AC inverter system so I can use the electric system to power the FTA equipment. If you are interested google Roadtrek check them out.

We finally had a 50-degree afternoon and all of the ice and snow are gone from the rooftops. I got a wild hair to throw up a temporary antenna on my flat roof, above the 2nd floor apartment that I rent in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, for my job at Skyvision. Knew it would be possible, because 14 years ago in Grand Forks, I was able to use an 8.5 foot Orbitron Micromesh antenna to clear a 6.5 degree elevation angle just over a flood control dike, and achieve excellent analog reception form Hispasat. That neighborhood was destroyed by flooding in 1997.

Fergus Falls is 125 miles to the south and east, with a 7.5 degree elevation, and about +1 dB more signal than Grand Forks...a whopping nominal +45 dBw.
My first bag of tricks solution was to take a cheap run of the mill 90 cm offset dish and flip it upside down so that the LNBF was on top of the dish. Where a "normal" offset Ku band installation ends up with the dish pointing 15 degrees into the ground, the flip-over solution gives me a physical dish elevation of about 37 degrees. (Add a 22 degree offset angle twice = 44 degrees, and subtract 7.5 degrees to get the 37 degree resulting elevation).

The flip over solves the problem that many offset antennas have in not being able to get satellites with true elevations under 10 degrees. The reflector pointing in the 35 to 40 degree elevation instead of into the ground means that you pick up less terrestrial noise from the ground. It will catch more snow in the winter, but it does not get hung up on the mount. Quality reading on a Super Buddy was 69-70on the Cuba MUX, and was in the low 60s on most of the Spanish MUXES (12132, 12172). Considering that this was a flimsy 36 inch offset, I was impressed. You should do at least as well with ANY 90 cm offset antenna, and I would also suggest acceptable results with 75 and 84 cm Primestar elliptical antennas.
Just make sure that you rotate the LNBF about -40 degrees to match the skew before attempting to find the satellite.

motor skews the whole dish giving a pretty low angle. 30w its around a 45degree angle for me. I could get further East but no other Ku birds seem to be pointing this way

Mike,
Here is how I interpret your inverted dish angle formula:

Satellite Elevation of an inverted offset dish = 2 times Dish offset angle minus normal (un-inverted) satellite elevation angle.

Is my interpretation of your formula correct and when you give the -40 degree skew is that turning the LNB clock-wise facing the dish?

The 40 degree skew is actually what it is here in Minnesota for Hispasat

I get -42 skew here in Minneapolis (about 3 hours SE of where Mike is)

Thats interesting, Here is my information from dish pointer and the skew is -40. I was trying to see if Mike's formula will help when I try and get the Atlantic Birds down by the bay (when it gets warmer). I just want to know if there is a different skew rotation when you invert the dish.

Considering a dedicated dish myself. I can barely reach it with the motor, and only using DiSEqC 1.2, not with USALS. The content on that bird definitely justifies a fixed dish.

Only 5 deg above the horizon here... think I might try it with a 33" spare but would likely be best with something a bit bigger. Likely a lot of atmospheric affects at such a low angle. Maybe up on the roof would work better... A challenge for sure!

Click on the above link within the Global Communications website, for lat/long, elevation and azimuth headings, EIRP levels as well as skew rotation for 30-West HISPASAT satellite cluster.

Minus 45 skew = 7:30 clock position, as viewed from front of antenna
Minus 30 skew = 7:00 clock position
Minus 15 skew = 6:30 clock position

A fixed dish is well worth it for this bird. Check out Cubavision´s epg:

I know, I know... it's in Spanish, but you can get an idea of the movies they are showing usually after 11 pm. It´s not very simple to understand and the translation of the movie names is horrible but I sometimes google the cast and director to find out the movie title in english.

Anyway, if you can catch this sat I think it´s well worth it.

Those mid eastern channels offer a dose of european soccer, camel races (!) and the other day I watched on a Lybian channel 5 guys being executed (for real!) after a pretty quick trial. I did not understand a thing being said but didn´t need translation for "firing squad" Things work differently in other parts of the world I guess.

If I can only get rid of a few tree branches east of my current motorized dish position.:(

I have the Google toolbar with a translator, it still is tough to understand in english. LOL

wish i had a los for that bird:(
my landlord owns the woods behind my house, maybe i'll run the 250 ft of cable it would take to get a los
from my movable dish 72w is as far east as i can get
btw, how strong is the sig on 30w?
