I'm staying at my grandfather's house and he has a 10' satellite dish a Motorola DSR922 and a pansat 3500sd. And was wondering if I could get a taste of FTA with only that. I am new to this so I know nothing about it.
There are a couple channels in the clear on the DSR922. I'm not sure where the channels are since I don't have a cband dish. You can use the DSR922 to move the dish and control the polarity.
The 3500 will also get you some channels that are DVB-S and standard definition. It won't get a lot of channels since most are HD or are DVB-S2. You would need to get a new receiver to get all the goodies. You Pansat 3500 can also control the polarization to get you both horizontal and vertical channels.

Is everything,or anything, already hooked up?Was it a working system? When was the last time it was actually used? Can you take, and post, some pictures of just what you have to work with?
Getting that receiver will not necessarily make things easier.
It will not control the polar-rotor on the dish, nor will it move the dish.
I recommend upgrading to a LNBF and replacing the LNB/Feed-horn/polar-rotor if you are going this route.
The Titanium C1-PLL would be a good choice.
Then you can use the 922 to move the dish.
