MLS is about to take over the NHL in average attendance

In the US, in the last 10 years, soccer HAS become more popular the hockey. Doesn't the growth of attendance proves that when it shows one is declining and one is growing? Does it show with more soccer content on cable and satellite TV and less hockey content?

You answered something different from my statement. This is an extremely misleading article by a writer who obviously wants to advance her agenda that soccer is more popular than hockey.

On what are you basing your statement that 'there is less hockey content on TV'?

I cannot comment about NASCAR because I do not watch it at all. But you tell me, is there MORE football content added on TV in the last 10 years or more NASCAR? I would say there is MORE NFL than NASCAR.

Cosmo, the soccer crowd (which usually includes me) is just trying to set up a straw man argument and ignoring a whole lot of facts when they try to advance their agenda that soccer is more popular than hockey.

The LA Galaxy average attendance is above the average attendance of every single NBA and NHL team. Which also means Seattle has higher attendance as well.

That does not mean that soccer as a whole is all that popular here in LA.

TV ratings are well below that of Hockey and Basketball. It is never shown in bars, it is often tape delayed; they are not on a consistent RSN (they get bumped between FSW and FSPT), they only show a fraction of their games (18), and many soccer fans in LA simply prefer other teams.

Seriously, the top two teams in LA are the Lakers and Dodgers. Right behind them are USC Football, UCLA Basketball, and the Raiders. Trust me when I say the Galaxy is a very very very very distant #_______ behind all them in fan following and popularity

They play about 1/2 of the games played in the NHL and NBA and 1/4 of that played in MLB. I would bet if they played as many games as they do in the NBA, then their average attendance will go way down.

Heck, I've even been to a game because the Home Depot Center is right around the corner from my sister and the tickets were free. My sister and her family go often because they often get cheep or free tickets and they don't care for soccer all that much either. They just go to simply get outside, watch an event, eat some food, and enjoy family time

The overnight ratings for the 2010 MLS Cup (the championship game) were down 44% from 2009.

Say that slowly...Fourty four percent decline in one year. Yeah, the league is surging in popularity.

That is based on an opinion and not fact because there is no data to show either way. Hell, if MLB played tons fewer games and no one had stadiums that hold more than 39,000 fans, you can say they would have better attendance numbers across board too....BUT, since there is no data to support nor deny that claim, it would only be speculation on my part.

The author bases the "average" attendance for a league that consists of half as many teams playing a much short schedule (30 games vice 82) in much larger venues. I can't wait to see the 112,000+ fans fill the Big House should the NHL ever decide to host a Winter Classic in Michigan Stadium.

I am going to go back and read where I said "more popular"... just to make sure....I do not recall saying it was more popular nor was it my intention. But facts remain, IF you draw MORE, it means you are liking the product being sold....making it MORE POPULAR. You do not buy, sell, eat, watch or wear something you do not like....or it is not "popular" to you.

Attendance is not the only factor in popularity of a league or a team. I only go to a couple Detroit Tigers games a year and usually no Detroit Redwings games but I watch a whole lot of them on tv. In general I think its safe to say that most people watch many more hours of live sports on tv than in person at the games.

The leagues make a ton of money off their tv contracts because so many people watch them. I don't have any ratings numbers but I think if we sorted the sports by ratings or dollar amounts of TV contracts you would see which sports are really the most popular. I would guess that the NFL has the highest ratings and tv contracts and the MLS would be the lowest.

I personally don't watch much soccer except a few world cup games, but you are probably right about soccer growing in the US. I just don't believe it has surpassed any of the big 4 sports leagues.
