MLB Trade Deadline/Rumors

Tigers Acquire Jhonny Peralta

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 28 at 5:20pm CST]
The Tigers acquired Jhonny Peralta and cash from the Indians for minor league pitcher Giovanni Soto, according to the team. MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince reports on Twitter that the Tigers are getting cash, and ESPN.com's Buster Olney says the Tribe will pay most of Peralta's salary (Twitter link). To make room on their 40-man roster, the Tigers designated Wilkin Ramirez for assignment (Twitter link).
Brandon Inge and Carlos Guillen are on the disabled list, so Peralta gives the Tigers infield depth as they chase the Twins and White Sox. The infielder switched to third base last season after years at short. Peralta hasn't hit much this year, as his .246/.308/.389 line shows. The 28-year-old makes $4.6MM this season (about $1.7MM remains) and the Tigers have a $7.25MM option for 2011 with a $250K buyout.
In Soto, the Indians acquire a promising left-hander who still appears to be years away from the majors. The 2009 draft pick (21st round) has a 2.61 ERA with 8.3 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9 as a starting pitcher in A ball this year.
This deal should set the market for Miguel Tejada, another former shortstop who is having a similar season to Peralta at the plate. The Cardinals are interested in the former AL MVP.
Earlier today, Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com reported on Twitter that Mike Lowell wasn't drawing much interest, even though he hit three homers last night. The Tigers had some interest in Lowell, but today's trade likely means the Red Sox will have to find another trade partner.

Nice pickup for Detroit. I've always liked Peralta as a player! :up

They need someone, they have so many holes with injuries, anything has to help.
I don't look to Peralta to be the ANSWER as SS for the team though. For this year, Yes, but not as the permanent Shortstop.

Roy Oswalt Rumors: Wednesday

By Tim Dierkes [July 28 at 6:00pm CST]
The lowdown on Roy Oswalt, with the newest buzz up top...
  • Astros owner Drayton McLane told Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle that a trade seems likely. "I'd say it's about 60% that something could be done and 40% that Roy will be here next year," McLane said.
  • Oswalt is telling friends that he can’t wait to leave Houston, according to Newsday’s Ken Davidoff. The righty says he won’t necessarily insist that teams pick up his 2012 option.<LI id="">Oswalt wants ample time to decide on any trade, reports MLB.com's Brian McTaggart. He doesn't want the Astros coming to him an hour or two before Saturday's deadline.
  • The Reds made a cursory call on Oswalt, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, but no names were exchanged. John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer wrote today that Oswalt is too expensive for the Reds.
  • The Cardinals are out and the Dodgers are making no progress, reports Rosenthal. The Phillies' front office is still divided about giving up prospects and taking on Oswalt's contract, though the players they'd send to the Astros are "pretty much agreed on." Earlier today, Joel Sherman of the New York Post wrote that the Cardinals remain in contact with the Astros for Oswalt.
  • If Oswalt takes the mound Friday night against the Brewers, "the odds of him being traded are down to almost nothing" says Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle. ESPN's Buster Olney tweets that the Astros are "working very, very hard" to find an acceptable Oswalt deal despite all the obstacles.
  • The Phillies "remain top contenders" for Oswalt, writes MLB.com's Todd Zolecki. Zolecki's source thinks Oswalt's 2012 club option "is not the sticking point it has been made to be." On the other hand, ESPN's Jayson Stark feels that if the Phillies retain Jayson Werth as expected they won't have a way to clear 2010 payroll for Oswalt.

Adam Dunn Rumors: Wednesday

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 28 at 4:32pm CST]
The Angels, Tigers, Rangers, Giants, Rays and Rockies were all connected to Adam Dunn in yesterday's round of rumors, but the White Sox may be the best fit of all. Dunn's left-handed bat would fit well into Ozzie Guillen's lineup, but the Nats are asking for Daniel Hudson plus a prospect. Washington could still extend Dunn, who says he'd consider three or four-year deals. Here's the latest on the slugger; we'll add more bullets throughout the evening.

  • Dunn is a "bit of a longshot" for the Rockies, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post (Twitter link).
  • Lots of baseball people expect the Nationals to trade Dunn, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (via Twitter). The White Sox and Giants appear to be stronger players for Dunn than the Yankees, according to Sherman (Twitter link).
  • The Rays remain "in the mix" for Dunn, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (Twitter link).

Nice pickup for the Dodgers! :up

When Manny comes off the DL, the Dodgers will have a lot of depth in the OF. Sort of reminds me of 2008, when they had Manny/Kemp/Ethier with Andruw Jones and Juan Pierre on the bench.

In fact, Pods reminds me a little of Pierre.
I think they realized how important Pierre was to them, so they got another "Pierre"

OMG! We finally got rid of Jhonny! (spelling is correct). This is wonderful! Detroit, thank you so much. You will soon share the frustration that all Indians fans suffered throughout his tenure here.

I always viewed him as the one player who never reached his potential. And it was completely frustrating to watch the wasted talent on a nightly basis. On certain days, he would look like a world beater. On the majority of others, he'd look completely disinterested (even when the Indians were contenders). He lacks hustle, heart, has a less than average glove and range, and is clueless at the plate. Good luck.

Good, because he was so bad at SS, the Indians moved him to 3B.

Not a problem, he has to hit better than who we have there now.
Also, I don't see him being here next year, if he is he'll be on the bench, I would expect the Tigers to go out and get a bonafide Short Stop in the off season.
Peralta is just a Stop gap, I hope.

Jimbo, this kid has been a disappointment ever since he was born and his parents spelled his name wrong on the birth certificate (true story).

Gee, how hard is it to get the typing error fixed the same week it was printed ?

Ever since he was born ?

That's pretty harsh.

Yes, this has been rumored for a while. I am surprised they pulled this with Coughlin getting hurt. Cantu will be missed, he was a fan favorite and a decent RBI man.

Miguel Tejada, Josh Bell Scratched

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 29 at 4:24pm CST]
Miguel Tejada and Josh Bell have been scratched from their respective games today, so it appears that the Orioles have traded Tejada, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun (via Twitter). Tejada may have been scratched since he's about to join another team and Bell may have been scratched because he's about to join the O's, though nothing is official yet.
The Cardinals and Phillies have shown interest in Tejada, though Connolly suggests the former AL MVP could be headed to San Diego.

And Cantu will always be part of a great trivia question.............the 2008 Marlins are the only team in MLB history to have all four infielders hit 25 HR's (Mike Jacobs, Dan Uggla and Hanley Ramirez are the others).

In fact, Cantu was only 1 HR away from all four having 30 HR's!

Cantu is still in the game, shouldn't they sit him if he was traded.
