MLB Magic Numbers and Eliminations

Philadelphia was the first to clinch a playoff berth this afternoon, but Tampa Bay can close again to three games behind the Red Sox with a win tonight and make for a tense, four game series this weekend.

Sad that Lackey actually pitched well enough to win for once (2 runs in 5.1 innings) but Bard had his 5th Blow of the season. I think he was second to Papelbon last year (7 versus 8, so he likely has the most Blows in the majors over the last two years.

I'm really hoping the Rangers have a better record than the Tigers. It would be nice to have home field advantage possibility for at least the ALDS.

You may get your wish if the Tigers keep letting Brad "Melon Head" Penny pitch for them down the stretch. Go Tigers!

If the Angels beat out the Red Sox and Rays for the Wildcard, the Tigers and Rangers would end up playing each other in the ALDS.

Any combination of ten Tampa Bay wins or Boston losses, or ten Angels wins or Boston loses eliminates the Red Sox.

Detroit and Texas are both 90-65 and they are battling for home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs. While Texas has not technically "wrapped-up" the division, there is no way the Angels are going to overtake them in the division being 5-games behind with 7-games left to play.

Assuming both teams finish with identical records how is the tie-breaker determined? The Tigers hold a 6-3 advantage in their season series, but I have no idea if this is the prime tie-breaker.

Also, the Tigers hold a big advantage since all seven of their final games are being played at home (Comerica Park). Of course, they are also "tweaking" their pitching rotation for the postseason and have a rookie pitching two of them. I think the Tigers will gain the home field advantage. We shall see...

As long as both teams have already qualified for the postseason (which is obviously the case here), head-to-head is the first tiebreaker. Homefield would go to the Tigers.

Both the Tigers and Rangers lost tonight.

The Angels lost tonight too, so the MN should be 2 now. Hopefully the AL West gets wrapped up in the next few days. :)
