With only 24 days until the end of the regular season, magic number talk has commenced.

Here are the up to date MN's, as well as teams mathematically eliminated from postseason consideration:

American League
Yankees: division MN-25...........playoff berth MN-16
Tigers: division MN- 19
Rangers: division MN- 20
Red Sox: playoff berth MN- 16

AL teams eliminated: Orioles

National League
Phillies: division MN- 18.........playoff berth MN- 10
Brewers: division MN- 15
Diamondbacks: division MN- 17
Braves: playoff berth MN- 17

NL teams eliminated: Astros

From a different perspective.

Ultimate Astros » Astros take 10-game lead, tragic number dwindles to 15
And you thought the Astros wouldn’t have anything to play for in September! At a time when many baseball fans are tuning up for the stretch run — and others are turning their attention to football — the Astros are sprinting to a (ahem) promising September finish of their own.

With a bit more than three weeks left in a disastrous 2011 season, the Astros tragic number is 15 on this Labor Day. Any combination of 15 Astros’ losses and Baltimore wins will clinch the #1 pick for Houston in next June’s amateur draft.

But that tragic number may also be the Astros’ magic number, especially if you consider the #1 pick somewhat of a prize. Heading into the stretch run, the Astros hold a 10-game lead on Baltimore in the race for that first pick. Kansas City (11.5) and Seattle and Minnesota (both 12.5 GB) are also battling for the runnerup spot.

Tigers should now be 18 going into Mondays game.

Right you are, Jimbo. Updated MN's going into today:

American League
Yankees: division MN- 23.......playoff berth MN- 15
Tigers: division MN-18
Rangers: division MN- 19
Red Sox: playoff berth MN- 16

National League
Phillies: division MN- 18.........playoff berth MN- 9
Brewers: division MN- 13
Diamondbacks: division MN- 16
Braves: playoff berth MN- 15

Over/under Sept. 15 as the Tigers clinching date?

That would be nice, I still have memories of 09 when they had about the same lead and lost it to the twins

Two teams could be ME (mathematically eliminated) by the end of the day: the Royals and Cubs

Over/under Sept. 15 as the Tigers clinching date?

I think it will be slightly later than that.
It would seem unreal for the Tigers to ever clinch something EARLY.

That said, the earlier the better, this way we don't have any pitching issues, such as having to run Verlander out there to get in and not be able to pitch game 1

I agree it will be somewhat later than that (around the 20th?), but the Tigers are currently trending towards an earlier clinching.

The way I see it the Tigers would have to win the next 8games to make Sept. 15th, don't see that happening, could happen, but doubt it.

Yankees win, Red Sox lose...............Yanks division MN is down to 21 and playoff berth MN is now 14, meanwhile the Sox playoff berth MN is still 16.
