MLB All-Star Game

HR Derby contestants thus far

David Ortiz - Red Sox
Corey Hart - Brewers
Miguel Cabrera - Tigers
Matt Holliday - Cardinals
Vernon Wells - Blue Jays

The National League has not win an All-Star Game since 1996. To put that in perspective, the last time the NL triumphed in the Midsummer Classic, Derek Jeter and Kevin Garnett were rookies!

Anyone think they'll finally end the drought this year?

I can make a case for Furcal. Because of his time on the DL and Bereavement list, he has around 20 plate appearance to few to qualify among the stats leaders. If he played about 5 more games, he would be leading the league in average
It looks like the case has been made. Furcal will be replacing the injured Jose Reyes

UPDATE: Hong-Chih Kuo, Los Angeles Dodgers added to replace Jason Heyward of the Braves
This makes Kuo the first Taiwanese player to appear on the All Star Game, and it gives the NL a left handed relief pitcher they desperately needed.

Hart of the Brewers will be starting in the outfield in place of Heyward

Both of these teams have potent lieups, with the NL being a younger group (in fact, a much much much younger group).

I look for this game to be close again, within 1 or 2 runs, like it has been each of the last 5 years and 8 out of the last 9 years. Only two years during this time were the games decided by 2 or more runs and only one year by more than 2 runs. This tells me that both teams have been pretty much evenly matched over the last decade (where many games were lost by relief pitchers late or by errors by one guy...Ugla...cough...cough):

2009 Busch Stadium, St. Louis - American 4-3
2008 Yankee Stadium, New York - American 4-3
2007 AT&T Park, San Francisco - American 5-4
2006 PNC Park, Pittsburgh - American 3-2
2005 Comerica Park, Detroit - American 7-5
2004 Minute Maid Park, Houston - American 9-4
2003 U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago - American 7-6
2002 Miller Park, Milwaukee - Tie 7-7
