MLB 2013 Season

...Baseball, more than any other sport, is about respecting your opponent. JMHO!

Surely you jest. Baseball is the sport in which pitchers throw at batters, baserunners try to spike fielders, and pitchers enhance their effectiveness by using foreign substances on the balls they throw. And during "meles", uninvolved teammates are obliged by tradition to fight other uninvolved team opponents

I just don't get the whole acting like you won a championship when you win a division. It just looks dumb compared to their other sports brethren.

Could you imagine Tom Brady coming back on to the field in his skivs with a bud light box on his head celebrating winning the AFC east? How about Lebron and Dwayne Wade spraying champagne on each other for clinching the southeast division?

And the Red Sox will probably have a celebration when they win the east that will look just as dopey. Maybe not as bad as previous years because of the departures and new arivals.

It is because unlike other sports, the MLB season is a long marathon and only few teams compete the marathon.

In other sports, not only are the by number of games much less, there are a lot more teams that make it to the playoffs. So simply going to the playoffs is not as big of a feat. In some sports, close to half of the teams go to the playoffs.

I do agree that many of these celebrations are over the top, including this one.

In the Dodgers case it was more due to the great run, coming from last place 3 months into the season and dealing with more injuries to key players more so than any other team, most of the season. Overcoming that was a great accomplishment.

I think you both make good points. I have no problem with division clinching, LCS clinching and obviously World Series winners. I agree with SkiKing in that baseball is different in the games played to the other sports, and therefore the sense of accomplishment is different. That said, like Hart pointed out, some of these celebrations (Papelbon in his underwear dancing around the Fenway infield with Theo Epstein) is beyond embarrassing.

Again, I have no problem with a tempered celebration for winning the division. However, I CAN'T STAND when the bubbly comes out for a division series win. IMO, THAT is the most embarrassing celebration in all of sports.

Tonight's clinching scenarios.....

National League-
Dodgers- have clinched NL West
Braves- will win NL East with win AND Nationals loss

American League-
Red Sox- have clinched playoff berth.......will win AL East with win OR Rays loss

The Braves won today at a day game over the Cubs. So are you saying that if the Nats lose tonight they will clinch?

Oops, I was looking at the standings and didn't realize the Braves already won today. Sorry, my bad.

The correct scenario for the Braves tonight: they will win the NL East with a Nats loss.

ESPN calculates that the Red Sox have a 99.9% chance of making the playoffs this year. I guess there is an 0.1% chance that the world will end within the next two weeks.

Sorry, again. The Braves HAVE NOT clinched a playoff berth yet either (NESN just reported that they did). Again, Nats lose tonight and the Braves are East champs.

Playoffs or winning their division? They have already clinched a playoff berth.
