Tim Wakefield's pursuit of the Red Sox all-time wins record continues tonight as he takes the mound in place of Josh Beckett, who is suffering from a strained back.
That's the good news for Tim Wakefield fans. The bad news is, of course, that Toronto get baserunners get the opportunity to fatten their stats. The Blue Jays come into tonight's game ranked 9th in stolen bases, with just 19, an average of well under one per game, but are third in base stealing efficiency at 79%. Look for those numbers to improve tonight.
Victor Martinez, who, earlier this season, had thrown out only one of the first twelve baserunners attempting to steal against him, has since thrown out 6 of the next 28, to bring his caught stealing percentage up from 8.3 % to 17.5%, which, regrettably, is not a whole lot less than his career average and probably about where he is as a defensive catcher at this stage of his career.

Wish I could say the same about the Red Sox/Blue Jays game.
Tough loss for Wakefield, who pitched seven quality innings, yielding just two runs on five hits and a walk. Unfortunately, his opposite number, Shaun Marcum, who I had never heard of, was stellar, as he apparently has been all season. He should be suing his teammates for non-support.
The base path track meet never got started, four of the five hits Wakefield gave up were extra base hits, so the only time a Jays baserunner was on first was when catcher Jose Molina singled, but the inning ended three pitches later. Molina has just nine career stolen bases in ten big league seasons, but hasn't had one since 2007.
The only other opportunity they had to steal was when Jose Bautista walked. He has a much better baserunning pedigree than does Molina. Bautista has stolen a total of seventeen bases in seven seasons, but he, too, has not stolen one since 2007, so while this game will go into the statistical journals as a quality start by Wakefield with no stolen bases, Toronto remarkably never had any opportunities to steal any.

After going 14 years since the last time the Reds had a complete game shutout, guess what they did in back-to-back games? Yep a shutout. This time it was Homer Bailey that shut out the Pirates 5-0 to complete the sweep of the Pirates.
Steven Strasburg pitched six no-hit innings in Triple A yesterday, following his one hit, six inning stint last week, with a total of 13 strikeouts and only two walks. He is ready to come up, but Washington will keep him in the minors for three more weeks to delay his arbitration/free agency time table by a calender year, thereby saving themselves millions on salary in that interval.

The record for most wins by an AL team that didn't win the wildcard is 93 by half a dozen teams (.574). The Bluejays and Red Sox are both good enough this to shatter that record. The one thing that makes it tough for the Yankees and Devil Rays to continue their scortching pace, and for the Red Sox or Blue Jays to leap into the lead with gaudy win totals, is that with the unbalanced scheduling, they will knock each other off their paces.

Game was filled with walks, 12 allowed by the Tigers staff, 7 by Willis, 6 in the first 2 innings.
The Sox had 6 walks allowed as well.
It was fitting that the game was won on a walk.
