Microsoft's Mystery Monday revealed: Surface Tablets

Pretty slick looking. Basically a skinny laptop with a touch screen.

Will be interesting what price point they bring it in at.

And am I the only one to notice that the name of this is the same name they used before for a much bigger touch device?

I don't remember the surface name being used before. There was a line of touch devices by HP called the slate.

I haven't seen anything this exciting since Microsoft introduced Microsoft Bob!

Here's probably the shortest Wiki page I've seen that mentions it:
Microsoft Surface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And a further Wiki page that talks about what is now called pixel-sense :
Microsoft PixelSense - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As my cloudy memory remembers, it was a big, flat touch device that MS talked about a number of years ago.

A lot of people are actually pretty excited about this. Just needs to be executed well.

I can understand if the Apple folk are not amused.

Until some actual pricing is given, and someone actually can put their hands on one to do a good review, it will get a bit of positive press just because!

The entry level one appears to be a very much limited netbook with a slick look, the other is nothing more than a notebook with a touchscreen. I think that when pricing is announced, and it turns out to be much higher than people are expecting, the press will die down quickly.

I think the whole point of them announcing now is to try to get some iPad buyers to possibly defer their purchase until after it actually comes out. They have to fight the bleeding of PC users to non windows tablets.

Absolutely! This is an old marketing trick that MS has used a lot in its history. And in the past it has worked quite well. It remains to be seen if they still have that kind of clout in the tablet arena.

I will say that the design looks good.

Is it good in actual practice ? TBD.

Are the RT tablets cost competitive with top tier Android and iPad? TBD

Are the Pro tablets truly cost competitive with other ultrabooks? TBD

Is Windows 8 RT going to have a large catalog of available add-on software? TBD

Unfortunately, it's almost all TBD. Could be a home run, could be a failure. Too early to tell at this point.

Folks, it's a Windows product. They didn't start with a clean slate. It's very DNA has all those lovely Windows flaws we've come to - err, um - know. I just can't believe it will run much better or more reliably than any other Windows product. Bloat.

And think of all those experienced programmers that will easily port their knowledge to this new version as they devise ever more clever viruses.

The thicker keyboard looks like they copied the Logitech one for the iPad. But it's certainly a good idea.

OK, enough of the negativity. I will wait and see what actually hits the streets, and what people think of it six months later.
