Miami-FIU Brawl

There is absolutly no room for what took place on the football feild between UM and FIU. The punishments were not tough enough, and the NCAA should have stepped up to instill punishment on the schools to try and curb this sort of thing.

I was a tri-athlete in High School (Football, baseball, and basketball). Playing football is more intense than any sport I know of. The coaches are responsible for "pumping" you up and getting you mentally ready for a big game. The hopes of the coaches in their speeches, and tough drills is to raise your intensity so you will want to hit and tackle hard. They do not spend enough time teaching how to control that intensity. Its a mentality of "go hard or go home all the time". This in my opinion is part of the cause from fights and brawls on football feilds. Also, the personality of the players is a big part. The "thug" lifestyle some of these players imitate mixed with that "pumped" up intensity is a dangerouse mix.

I agree with the person here who said that the Big Ten has the most class in the NCAA. Ohio State, and Michigan may have some, (or in the case of Ohio State, a lot) of off feild issues, but on the field its class. The Big Ten plays a huge part in keeping that image. Maybe other conferences should as well.

See...I don't know about you...but to me there NO DIFFERENCE with on-field and off-field incidents....A THUG is A THUG...ON OR OFF THE FIELD....period.

I do agree with your thoughts on coaches not spending time teaching how to control intensity.

And a little food for thought....the baseball teams(Miami's and FIU's)...both ALWAYS highly ranked have had a bench clearing incident during a series each of the last 4 years.

I see a HUGE difference.
First , your in front of everyone on the field as well as the National public in most cases for the better teams, being on TV every week.

I don't condone any of it, if your screwing up outside of game day thet should be punished as well.

Did you realize that , this incident ,happened with thousands of kids being INVITED to this game, to PROMOTE GAMES not GANGS week ?????

What a great thing to show them ....

How about all the kids and young adults that could NOT make the game that heard the radio idiot, promote the GANG mentality with what he was saying.

Come on Jimbo...can cannot be serious....so what you are saying is that if he conducts himself like a true sportsman on the field...and a wacko crazy with a history of crime off the field...it's not as bad??!!!

Now what Lammar Thomas said was stupid...but I thought it was VERY hypocritical for them to fire him. Reason being is that if you know Lammar(not personally), he has NEVER been tactful and has always been a homer loudmouth....THAT IS WHAT they hired him to be...a boisterous loud mouth. So yes he said something stupid...but the station is a hypocritic for firing him. Suspend him without pay for 5 games or so.....but don't be bitch about what he said and how he said it because why you hired him in the 1st place.

They hired him to be a boisterous loud mouth, then they should not have hired him in the first place ....
Theres a difference between being obnoxiuos and being an idiot.
The Cincy analyst is that way (Trumpy, I think) and there are a lot of others , but he's the one that came to mind first, and someone in Chicago , but I can't remember who, but neither would do this type of stuff and encourage this type of behavior.

And I agree, maybe they should not have hired him for being what he is....but they did, so therefore, they are being hypocritical for firing him. Like I said, suspend him without pay for a few games. And believe me, there are PLENTY of obnoxious idots on the sports radio to last a lifetime. Now I don't think he was encouraging as much stating that "this is what happens when you come to our house and talk trash".....he did NOT encourage by saying, 'these guys are talking trash and disrespecting you...go kick their ass'.....there IS a diffrence.

Salsa, I never mentioned Miami fans or alumni, just the football team. If I were an alumni I would be embarrassed by what's going on down there, as I'm sure the majority are. This is truely a black eye for that program.

I agree totally. The University took great strides to clean up the programa few years back leading up to 2001 when they won the National Championship. But I assure you that less than 10% of what happened was THUGGERY and the rest was guys sticking up for your teammates. I doubt there is NOT ONE college football team in this country that would have stayed on the sidelines and said..."geez, we shouldn't be running on the field to help stickup for some of our teammates....I will sit this one out...."

I agree with what you are saying regarding players not staying out of it, you have to back up your teamates,
No Not everyone out there was involved in the fight, but those that were should be suspended, the guy throwing his helmet should NEVER play football again, that said, they should allow him to continue his education, just not be able to play sports...
Same goes for the guys that were purposly spiking people with their cleats...

Oh, BTW, Ohio State 31 Miami 24
You must remember that, don't you ???

Here is how there is this Anti-Hurricanes wave both by the media and 'Cane haters. There was another brawl where players were thrown on the floor and kicked.....between IVY LEAGUE SCHOOLS none the less!!!!!! Now are you going to call THOSE programs a group of thugs and hoodlums???!!!

HANOVER, N.H. --Dartmouth College's football team, coaches and athletic department are apologizing for an ugly incident at the end of the Dartmouth-Holy Cross game last weekend. After winning in overtime, Holy Cross players celebrated atop the Dartmouth "D" painted on the field, and fights broke out when the teams lined up for post-game handshakes. Some players were thrown to the ground and kicked. Coaches, campus security and Hanover police broke it up.

Dartmouth Athletic Director Jo Ann Harper today said the team and coaches join her in apologizing to Dartmouth, Holy Cross and the public. She said she has concluded her investigation and turned information over to Dartmouth's dean for review. Acting Dean Daniel Nelson says if his review concludes sanctions may be warranted against individuals or the team under Dartmouth's standards of conduct, the matter will be handled through the normal disciplinary process.

Harper said many players and some staff from both teams were involved, but that she was not able to identify specific participants.

There was no immediate word on whether Holy Cross also is reviewing the incident.

Salsa, I understand your point, but this is the third incident in , what, 8 games? Really hard to defend that. Once, yes. Twice , maybe. Three times, come on, even you have to admit that things are out of control. At Michigan fired our coach (Moeller) for being drunk at a restaraunt. I'll ask again, where is the NCAA after all of this?

So nothing has been done diciplinarily in this case yet ???

Are they too not part of the NCAA ??

Why has the NCAA not done a year long investigation like they did when some punk from OSU was getting tutioring , a car and stuff stolen. and cash I would guess. ???

btw, IS that 2 or 3 time felon still on Miami's team, I think his name was Williams, he had a record BEFORE he was recruted and got busted during his recruit and they STILL allowed him to play ....:down

Talk about standards ......

also, your President , she's quite good, there will be no fighting from this point forward or the'll , the'll ... not let them play the next game against Duke, but it's ok as long as your back in time for the game against the team on the top of the standings ...

She says there will now be a "ZERO TOLERANCE RULE" like there wasn't one already in place after all the BS that Miami gets away with....

Nope...Willie Williams is gone. AND is was a model citizen while there, just not good enough to play the team concept....he sat, was not happy and so they let him go.

I did not know that ? Did he transfer ?
I know he was a stud that FSU wanted as well and they dropped the idea when they found out about the runs in with the law.

btw, Terrel Owens is a model citizen when he's ON the FIELD...
It's a shame everyone wants to be Deion Sanders now.

So tell me your opinion on the Dartmouth/Holy Cross....I mean at Holy Cross...they have not even started an investigation. And we cannot say is was not as bad as the Miami/FIU brawl because the game was not televised.

Willie Williams was a model ON and OFF the field with a 3.0 average. He just did not fit the team mold Coker wanted. The year he was a senior in high school here at Miami Carol City...he was on EVERY list of the top 5 recruits, the HIGHEST rated defensive player in the country...#1 player on 2 of those list. Because he was not gonna start, he wanted out of UM. He tried transferring from West Virginia to Rutgers, to Middle Tennessee State...I don't remember where he ended up.

I have the same opinion of that as the Miami / FIU game , with a big difference, NO one has seen any high lights to know exactly what did happen.... But I beleive if the same type of stuff happened than the results should be comprable.
Just because theres no TV doesn't make it OK

I agree with you that a Thug is a Thug on or off the field. However, off the field is the athletes personal time. I am very conservative, so on a personal level, I would love to see the athletes punished for all off field incidents by the schools, whether it is grades, or petty crimes. But being in America, what they do is their choice.

I guess what I am trying to say is, for off field incidents not on campus, and on the athletes own time, I would suspend them for something like a robbery, or DUI. But I would not rip their scholarship. But it would be a three strikes and your out.

For on field incidents, or practice incidents, or anytime that is supposed to be devoted to the sport, it would be based on what the athlete does. For fighting during a game, I would take away the scholarship, and suspend the student for at least a year. For not co-operating, or being insubordinate to the coach, I would constitute to the three strike rule.
