Mexico signal issues

Thanks Alan for your many posts both here and on the non techie forum, MexConnect. I will be returning to the shores of Lake Chapala (south of Guadalajara) from Seattle in two weeks. I look forward to repositioning my 1.2, 1.8, and 2.4 meter offset dishes and playing around with 110, 119, and 129 W. I also have a DISH LNB on an almost Ku 12 foot C/Ku system. So there will be a lot of playtime.

I use the 75 E to get my Seattle stations in HD (Guess who pays for the *Choice account at the extended family cottage in BC so that we could also watch it when we head south, be it Seattle or MX?)

I report lost of all TP in Mexico City, i don't know if it's just a local problem of my dish or it's a general problem in Mexico City.

If someone is in mexico city please report your signals on 119

The signal here has progressively dropped off, and now I only get the Program Guide with no channels coming in. We are about 80 miles south of Cancun on the Caribbean, and I have a smallish dish (about 44 inches). Up to two weeks ago I was getting a couple of channels *CNN, HNN, SHOTO, SHOE, TWC, and one or two others.

The word seems to be you need 1.8 meters or greater, and even then it seems to be questionable. For many people it is a "wait and see" game, but we are about ready to make the jump to Sky, forsaking the networkd and PBS - UGH!!!!

I seem to be one of the lucky ones here in Cancun. I've got complete service using my old 1.1 meter dish with 2 LNBs for 110 and 119. I have noticed, particularly in this really bad weather we're experiencing that I have more rain fade than prior to the FEC changes. I'm planning on a dish upgrade to 1.8 or maybe even 2.4 to deal with this, even though in clear weather, which is 98% of the time here, I really don't need to upsize.

Having suffered through 18 months of Sky, and watching Sky with some of my Mexican friends, if you want current programing and US technical standards, you might want to consider Shaw, the Canadian satellite provider. That was going to be my backup plan if the E*14 situation went FUBAR. Fortunately, for me it didn't.

I am in Mexico City and I have lost most of the signal, recently after loosing the ESPN's (world cup matches) I decided to cancel my sub.

I am switching now to Shaw..

By the way, I will appreciate a PM with info installers in Mexico City to re-point my dishes.

I am in Puebla Mexico with a Channel Master antenna 1.1 and you can get a lot of tp with out rain fade.

All people reporting loosing signal they must be using fiberglass bad clones and cheap lnb.

With eagle aspen lnb you get over 10 point from a cheap lnb.

I was just talking to a friend who winters in Akumal ( south of Cancun). He has a 2 meter dish and has lost all but 2 channels. He has E* so he can watch tv in Texas and Mexico. Now that he cannot get it in Mexico, he is going to drop dish for U-verse in Texas and get Shaw Direct when he returns to Mexico. There are many Canadians in his complex so getting an address and equipment is becoming an easy deal.
He was an everything subscriber at $142 per month for 12 months. E*'s decision to reduce the footprint @ 119 is going to lose them many US/Mexico subscribers. Doing this without having an American package for their SATMEX deal is really poor business planning. I wonder how many others who are posting here are going to leave E*??

I seriously doubt the folks in charge of the satellite update in Dish Network considered this issue. They're under no obligation to provide US programming in Mexico and is probably not on their radar screen. Also, Dish Mexico was intended to compete with SKY for the eyeballs of Spanish-speaking Mexicans, not English-speaking Gringos. Most likely the folks in charge of programming decisions for Dish Mex. are probably Mexican Nationals who licensed the franchise from Dish Network US. Probably very little overlap between the management of these two companies.

It's a case of why should they be providing for the "gringos". It is for Mex not the USA. Kinda if you are a snowbird down there looks like will finally have to learn the language.

I agree as well. People in the US are continually saying that Spanish speakers in this country should learn English. What's good for the goose is good for the gander...

Absolutely. It's a genuine sign of respect for another's country. If you're going to live there, make a serious attempt to learn the language. The Mexicans appreciate it just as much as we do here.

Maybe at some time in the future they will. Right now they seem to concentrating on the the vast majority of those that live down there.

Por eso, no puedo aprender Esp. buey Remember if English is needed, you still have digital C band and of course Shaw Direct which carries my Seattle stations in HD and one can pick up all the transponders quite well in cental Mexico on a dish that is only 36.5 by 26.5 inches (Star Choice 75 E dish)

It will be interesting to see what happens with Echo* 15 at 61.5 this fall

Probably because Mexican-originated content is cheaper to license and freer to distribute than US originated. There are some US channels carried on Dish Mex with SAPs in English and Spanish but not consistently. Premium content providers have stiff regulations about A/V media distribution outside the US. You can't stream Hulu, Netflix or Pandora if the request comes from a non US-based IP address. And, although I haven't tried it, I bet Slingbox and the DN922 have the same blocks in place.

Have you watched much Latin American TV? Loaded with game shows, cartoons, soap operas and old movies. I doubt the Mexicans are hampered by the same distribution limits or cost structure for Mexican-originated content.

It's street slang meaning old and warn out. And it's often used by the much younger generation to make fun of those who are what? over 50?

Where I sometimes live along the shores of Lake Chapala, the vast majority of the Americans do not speak Spanish. Therefore DISH is terribly important. And many are very upset about E* 14.
