I know that there is already a "Trade Rumor" type thread out there...but when it involves quite possibly, one of THE best hitters in our lifetime, then it merits a thread all by itself. Down here, the sports talk radio is all abuzz about Manny coming down. IN FACT, most think it's a done deal the only thing that is left to be worked out is the issue of Manny waiving a clause in his contract about the Marlins picking up his option for next year.

...all I can say is....WOW!! IF this goes through, with all the arms coming into form for the Marlins, they HAVE to be considered the team to beat in the NL East.

...WOW!

Sources: Red Sox discussing deals to trade Manny

Updated: July 31, 2008, 6:43 AM ET

With the trade deadline looming, the Boston Red Sox are engaged in serious conversations to trade Manny Ramirez to the Florida Marlins, as well as other teams, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

The deadline to trade players without going to waivers is Thursday at 4 p.m. ET. As a player with 10 years in the majors and five with the same team, Ramirez has the right to veto any deal.

The Ramirez trade conversations are expected to continue into Thursday, a source told ESPN's Peter Gammons. Because it's a very complicated deal, involving a player who has the right to veto the trade and other parts, it is still unlikely to happen. But the negotiations will go on.

"They haven't asked me for anything," Ramirez told ESPNdeportes.com's Enrique Rojas on the phone from Fenway Park before the Red Sox-Angels matchup on Wednesday night.

"The Red Sox don't deserve a player like me," Ramirez said. "During my years here, I've seen how they [the Red Sox] have mistreated other great players when they didn't want them to try to turn the fans against them.

"The Red Sox did the same with guys like Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez, and now they do the same with me. Their goal is to paint me as the bad guy," Ramirez added. "I love Boston fans, but the Red Sox don't deserve me. I'm not talking about money. Mental peace has no price, and I don't have peace here."

Still, Boston players weren't convinced Ramirez would be dealt before Thursday's deadline.

"I think around here there's a lot more smoke than fire. If something happens, it happens," Boston's Mike Lowell said.

The deal might be a long shot, but Marlins president David Samson didn't rule it out Wednesday.

On his weekly radio show, Samson addressed reports the Marlins are discussing a trade to acquire Ramirez from the Red Sox.

"The Marlins always seem to be in the middle of everything," Samson said on WAXY-AM. "It takes two to tango. We're looking everywhere. We're making calls. We're getting calls. But we're not going to be stupid."

Asked specifically whether a deal for Ramirez was possible, Samson said, "I've always told you everything is possible. There are all sorts of crazy things. There's no way to say which trades are going to happen."

Now the REAL telling thing about the conversation with Sampson(heard the interview myself) is that is has never pulled punches. Whanever they have asked him about trades, and they weren't true.....he would falt out deny them and it was a done deal.....but whenever he has danced, shimmied and rope-a-doped around a rumor, you KNEW that they were up to something.....and that "something" would be in the form of a trade within hours.....

....stay tuned......;)

According to the Miami Herald, the deal is NOT depending on Manny or the Red Sox:

According to some reports, the Marlins would send outfielder Jeremy Hermida and several minor-league prospects to Boston, which would then send those players to Pittsburgh for outfielder Jason Bay and left-handed reliever John Grabow.

The Marlins would receive Ramirez, a prospect and enough cash ($6.7 million) to satisfy the remainder of this season's salary for the colorful outfielder.

One potential stumbling block: sources said the Tampa Bay Rays were continuing to talk to the Pirates about obtaining Bay, who would be the key to any deal involving the Red Sox
.

Stay tuned!

Oh boy!!! I see Manny has you brainwashed.:(

No....I am talking trading talent....for a couple of months. The Marlins will not sign him for the more than $20 million that he will command. Like I asked before....you gonna get equal value for what Manny has done ONE THE FIELD?

I will patiently wait for your response.

You actually think by trading Manny away to ANYBODY, that you will get the same value?

As I've stated on this board over and over, I DON"T CARE IF THE SOX GET EQUAL VALUE. Let the cashier at the Shop 'n Save play left field, let the Red Sox finish in the basement this season and we'll go get em in '09. I don't care...........just get this POS off the team!!!!

Let's see...like flopping his fat ass on a ball in the outfield in Angel Stadium and laughing about it? Like hitting a high fly ball to the outfield that could be dropped (As was the case by the Red Sox last night!!!) and just standing there looking at it instead of legging it out in case it got dropped? Oh yes...he is a REAL team player.

And, I am NEVER going to buy into his Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde Onfield/Offfield personas. Any a$$hole that decks his Director of Team Travel because he can't come up with 16 tickets on gameday and yells at him in front of everyone to do his job has no place in any MLB clubhouse in America. PERIOD!

I suppose that was all made up by Sox management, too?

Salsa,
I'm just curious, as a Marlins fan, why would you want Hanley Ramirez anywhere near Manny? When Hanley came up to the Sox in '05 he looked up to Manny. If I were starting a team tomorrow, Hanley Ramirez would be the first player I would pick. Why would you want to risk his attitude being affected by this loser?

Were you there? Did you see what happened in the clubhouse? Are you going by what you read or heard by the media? I worked behind the scenes for Chicago sports media covering the Bulls, Cubs, White Sox and Blackhawks.....believe me, the COMPLETE truth never comes out....

TWO MONTHS....barely....You guys think he will have THAT MUCH influence on Handley Ramirez in a 2 months span....??!! AND, that was 3 years ago....THREE YEARS AGO??!! When Handley and Manny in the same clubhouse and he was JUST out of the minors.....You are under assumption that he has done little maturing at all.....

Man....get your heads outta your a$$......HE IS A RENTAL......LOL:haha:no

Looks like the deal with Marlins is off, Tampa is going after Bay them self too.

Too bad we can't trade Manny for Hanley and cash from Florida would of been happy with that LOL.
