Major channel changes in May 2019 - All AT&T Video Services

I remember this all too well, long before there was a nick@nite, TV Land, etc. But the ONLY thing that Nickelodeon & Arts had in common, was that they shared the same satellite x-ponder. (keep in mind this was before satellite channels started scrambling their signals) And because they were completely separate cable channels, each cable system HAD to have a separate contract to carry each service. While most cable systems back then DID carry both service, I had the misfortune to be on a TCI cable system when I was going to college at SIU-C in the mid 80's. The last year I was down there, the entire system had been rebuilt & expanded their channel lineup. (before the rebuild, the ONLY cable channels they carried, was ESPN part-time on their public access channel, plus HBO & Disney pay channels! :coco ) After they added the new channels, per the attached lineup card I still have, we were able to see both Nickelodeon & Arts, like most other viewers did. UNFORTUNATELY, about a month into this, TCI, without any warning, started cutting off A&E when the prog switched to them; they didn't even put up a message, test pattern, etc...all they did was literally kill the ch 2 modulator it was on, so that the channel turned into snow! Of course, when myself & others called TCI to see what gives, they told everyone TCI did NOT have a contract to carry Arts & it was their error to have let it be broadcast in the first place. I was bummed when that happened...but at least our system up here DID carry it, so I could record shows on our VCR's up here & take the tapes back down to watch when I would visit home. :amen

Wow, I just had a flashback of something I haven't thought about in years. Back in the very early 90s, on my cable lineup, believe it or not Disney Channel and Playboy Channel actually shared the same channel space. They were on channel 33. Disney Channel was on air from 6a-11p or thereabouts and Playboy had the overnight. Not sure if it's because at the time maybe Playboy and Disney didn't have full time channels, or if it was some space saving method the cable company used. This is back when Disney Channel was a premium cable network and had no commercials.

Needless to say, the kid around the corner who's parents had one of those 'special' cable boxes was very popular when it came to weekend sleepovers. :)

I remember a "incident" in the news when a cable co aired Playboy in place of Disney DURING THE DAYTIME...

At one time, back in the 80’s, Playboy was called ‘Playboy at Night’ so I believe they were just on at night at the time.

it was either a Viacom decision or AT&T decision to change it to a different package or going the "a la carte" option.
