Local Only?

Ever since I got a new computer w/windows Vista, I'll be on the internet just fine, and suddenly no web pages will load, my IM stops working and no data is exchanged. I look down at the connection icon by the clock, and the little globe is gone from the two computers, and it says "local only" when I move the mouse over it. WTF? ...I always have to disconnect/reconnect to fix it! ...Yes I have crappy dial-up. My old computer with XP never did this ...what's local internet anyway? If anyone has had this happen please let me know how you fix it.

It's not local internet, it stand for local ethernet...or when you connect more than one computer via a router. It means that you've lost your internet connectivity, although why that is happening is anyone's guess.

One thing I have seen in Windows Vista and even XP is that sometimes something can break the DNS server settings. I spent over an hour the other day troubleshooting a customers computer that could ping an IP address by number, but not by name....and we tried over 12 different DNS servers.
