Lifetime and Lifetime Movie Network off Dish due to contract dispute

Any kind of credit is worth the call to Dish.

I am under a contract till april, but when we signed up, it was under the idea that Life TIme was avl and Lifetime movie network.

Seems like we were "bait and Switched" away from cable and put under a contract.

I sure hope they work this out soon. I dont like being tricked. My wife is not very happy. She went to Grand Mas and watch Life time where her (she was going to visit anyway).

Ctconcern.. No idea as those are place holders for lifetime and LMN... We wont know untill the plug is offically pulled and those channels are gone and replaced with another ones. Keep an eye out for the uplink reports :) they will clue you in if there is any changes. :)

Edit (there still is programming on those channels its mirrors of WE)

I supported E* versus OLN/Comcast, but I'm on the other side fence on this issue. E* is spreading misinformation and is misrepresenting the facts in this matter; very unprofessional...absolutely zero concern for their customers.

I support Lifetime Network in this matter! I hope they they refuse to provide programming to E*, at any cost, until 2007!!!

Reading both sides how can you pick a side to be on? There is no real way to know who is telling the truth.

It's not in dispute that they were in negotiations for 7 months and failed to reach an agreement. The unprofessional way that Charlie pulled the networks with no notice to customers has me leaning towards Lifetime's position.

I haven't heard "The Golden Girls" theme song all day now. It's been heavenly for me, but not so much for my mom and sister.
Anyway, here's hoping this dispute gets resolved so that all "Golden Girls" fans can get there daily fix soon. :yes

Correct, we don't know what really happened. On one side I see where Charlie could be coming from. If i owned a satellite/cable company I wouldn't want to be overcharged and treated different then other tv providers but on the other hand I can kind of see where Lifetime is coming from. They are just like any other company, they need to keep up with the rate of inflation but I highly doubt that they were going to charge a 76% increase. Thats crazy. Charlie is just trying to make himself look good by saying stuff like that.

Well without a contract (or Lifetimes extension of the current contract) Dish wouldn't have rights to re-broadcast the channels. I agree that the way the channels were pulled was unprofessional. I have a real problem with some of what I have read in respect to this issue. Everyone is calling Charlie the bad guy, now I am not a Charlie fan but what if he is right in this issue. Lifetime can say anything they want because they look like the victim. I would like to see the contract. We can spectulate all we want, there is no way to know who is right on this issue.

Lifetime Television Pulls Channels From DISH Network;

Lifetime Television Pulls Channels From DISH Network; Lifetime's Demand to Renew With a 76 Percent Rate Hike Would Result in Unreasonable Price Increases for DISH Network Customers

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 1, 2006--EchoStar Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH) and its DISH Network satellite service was forced by Lifetime Television to remove Lifetime and Lifetime Movie Network from its satellite TV service.

DISH Network's contract with Lifetime expired Dec. 31, 2005. DISH Network deeply regrets the disruption of service to customers, but prior to the loss of Lifetime Movie Network, Lifetime refused to offer an extension for continued negotiations. Consequently, DISH Network was legally prohibited from broadcasting Lifetime and Lifetime Movie Network.

Lifetime demanded an exorbitant price increase of 76 percent under the contract term. If DISH Network capitulated to Lifetime's skyrocket pricing, unreasonable rate increases for DISH Network customers would result. Lifetime is also insisting DISH Network force consumers to pay for a new channel with similar content to a channel already available on DISH Network. In order to continue to bring customers the programming they want at a fair price every month, DISH Network must say NO to Lifetime's strong-arm tactics.

"While we are working hard to negotiate a fair contract with Lifetime Television, we must also protect our customers from outrageous rate increases," said Eric Sahl, senior vice president of Programming at DISH Network. "We appreciate the relationship we have had with Lifetime over the past 10 years and we hope they will reconsider their position and return their channels to our customers."

Below is a copy of a letter posted Dec. 31, 2005, on www.fairsatellite.com from DISH Network Chief Executive Officer Charlie Ergen in response to inaccurate statements appearing on Lifetime Television's website:

Louise Henry Bryson
President, Distribution and Affiliate Business
Development Lifetime Television

Dear Ms. Bryson:

The statements on your website with respect to our dispute are
inaccurate. Specifically, you claim that DISH Network violated our
contract by taking Lifetime Movie Network off the air. As you are
aware the agreement terminated December 31, 2005 and Lifetime
refused to offer any extension prior to DISH Network's loss of the
network today (the date of the contract expiration). We are
confident we have not breached the agreement and welcome the
disclosure to the public, any portion of the contract that
demonstrates DISH Network is in violation of our agreement.

In addition, Lifetime's final demand prior to our loss of the
network called for a 76% rate increase under the contract term.
DISH Network hereby waives any right to confidentiality which may
exist with respect to rates under our existing agreement and the
proposed rates under Lifetime's proposal so that the public can
judge for themselves. We challenge Lifetime to likewise agree to
the release of that information.

While DISH Network desires to make Lifetime programming available
to its customers, we also must protect our customers from
exorbitant rate increases. We have valued our relationship with
Lifetime Television over the past 10 years and we are hopeful that
we can work together to restore Lifetime programming to DISH
Network customers.

Sincerely,
Charlie Ergen
Chief Executive Officer
DISH Network
In the meantime, DISH Network is offering its customers a free preview of Women's Entertainment Network (WE), a channel which provides similar content to that on Lifetime.

It's probably one of those thing where it's a 10% increase every year for the length of the contract, but it will be a 70% increase from now compared to the END of the contract.

Oh Ok. I new 70% sounded kind of ridiculous.

Was that part of the 76% increase? I am guessing not. I am going to guess that they wanted a 76% increase for Lifetime and LMN plus another fee for Lifetime % then that would be a big increase. Even if it was half or a third of that it would still be pretty steep. Especially if that happened every year or even every three or four years. It would add up fast.

But look at the DirecTv vs. Dish/Lifetime situation. No issue, no increase in price.

I have always agreed with Dish on this issue and using these tactics and even more so in this case. This is EXACTLY what is being discussed by congress. Not just the rate increase but forcing even more channels to be carried by a provider in order to get other ones and therefore to be paid by us whether we want them or not. That does not mean there are some good points made by some here, such as the upcoming rate increase at the same time as two channels are dropped, or that Direct seems to keep all the channels without having to drop them for awhile. But it is true as was pointed out by one poster that Direct does not (and has not for a long time) been known for being in the black.

I think the answer by Dish really says it all for me. Assuming they are accuratly telling the story, they should do exactly what they are doing. I'm sure Dish is well aware they could lose some subscribers, but with about 1.5% of TV watchers watching Lifetime, they probably feel the long term effect on escalating costs is worse than the short term loss of a few subscribers.

Why is it that it seems only Dish has these contract issues and channels removed from our programming packages. Why is that Direct, Time Warner and other cable providers can work out the differences w/o having to pull content ? It's not like we Dish customers are paying any less for comparable offerings. Charlie tries to come off as the customers savior but I believe this has nothing to do with saving the subscribers any money but rather putting more shekels in his own pants pockets.
