spotbeams go about 200 miles...as an example, here in Minneapolis I can "see" (get a signal on spotbeam) for
Minneapolis (duh!)
Duluth, MN
Cedar Rapids, IA
Des Moines, IA
Eau Claire/La Crosse, WI

I couldn't see the spotbeam for say Fargo because it doesn't come that far. It allows Dish/Direct to reuse the transponder multiple times. So say TP4 which is Minneapolis can be reused (as examples) in Seattle, Boston, Tampa, Houston, Denver and Louisville. This saves space :)

Guys,
We are getting there.
Remember Sparty 10 just wanted to get his rig pointed. I gave him some almost ok news. And now I have more info. For myself I just want a checklist to assure myself that after tuning and before starting to activate eq the tuning is correct.

Just when ya get the smart of it they go and change it.

Thanks to all,

Joe

DirecTV cannot tell geographically where a particular IRD/STB is physically located. So if you move it to another address there is no way to tell unless you call them and let them know. However if you bring the IRD/STB outside your market, you may lose the locals based on the physical address you reported to DirecTV. DirecTV bases you locals on the physical address/installation address on your account. You don't get locals based on where the IRD/STB is geographically/physically located, but based on what you report to DirecTV.

For example, lets say you are planning a move from Michigan to Florida, and you call DirecTV a week early to report the new address. If the CSR changes the physical address to Florida while you are on the phone, you will instantly get the Florida locals in Michigan. The DirecTV movers connection will install a new dish at the new address and once you arrive in Florida, you should just need to connect the IRD/STB's yourself or on the appointment date have DirecTV movers connection tech do it.

A phone line is not required to be attached to an IRD/STB as some report, and yes you can still order PPV via internet (for all IRD/STB's on your account to get the PPV) or by remote to just that one IRD/STB. I don't use a phone line, I use cellular for home service. My service works fine without the phone line, and I have 2 HR20-700S units, and yes I can order PPV through the remote without the phone line.
Till you hit the PPV cap, sure you can order ppv's with your remote after that game over.

But wait if its "good to go" and "leagel" why then would he not plug in the phone line and order PPV's hmm......... Its not leagel is the answer and it can land you in jail.
first, its LEGAL, not LEAGEL. :D Now that we have the " i have to be cute" out of the way, he is ok, he doesnt have to report anything. Id love to see someone go to jail for this. can you prove this could happen? NO!

At the least he can be sued, have his dtv account closed for good and yes you can be jailed for placing receivers from your home in someone else’s. And NO ITS NOT LEGAL, wow glad you have such a grasp on spelling now try improving your comprehension.

P.S. its called mirroring fraud if there is more than one receiver involved and signal theft if there is only one receiver.

Milkman,

One could contact DTV and say Hi, I would like to move my service site to another address.......do a mover"s connection.......and then say after ten days....Hi I would like to move my service site back to where it was. I think the intent is to eliminate contacts with DTV AND the chance of some screw up. Just do it. The money is the same and there is no intent to defraud.

The PPV thing would just initiate an erroneous notification
that something is wrong when all is well.....no theft.

I'd love to be the lawyer that got that case. D* does not want to send a college kid to jail for taking his receiver to his parent's house for the Christmas holidays.

i comprehend fine, if you are going to make a bold statement though at least spell a simple word right. He will not go to jail for this as you stated. He can move for a time as posters above have made clear. He ist stealing anything

Ya know what would be nice?

If a DTV suite would come on an identify himself and say......"safe!.no foul...I speak for DTV and will note the account to eliminate any confusion in this matter....."

And an even better shocker.........if a DTV suite would come on and say....."I will investigate this matter and if it is as presented here I will:.........compel the lying cheating, stealing HSP to pay you OR..the CSR was wrong and we will correct the matter before the end of business today...."

I have never seen that.

Christmas is coming.

If Sparty wants to be "above board", all he'd need to do is call DirecTV and tell him of his circumstances. He is moving back home from college for a month. After all, this appears to be a one receiver account, and by simply changing the service address for a month, it would almost guarantee no interruption in service.

The only question for Sparty is, what locals do you get now, and what would your parents receive? The reasoning for the question is because of the spot-beams on DirecTV 7S at 101, and whether or not your parents receive the same local channels you do at school. If they are different, it may push you out of spot-beam range. And let's not forget there are plenty of markets which are only available at either 119 or 72.5, requiring an extra dish and switch.

DirecTV will never know, and I doubt they care. I'd rather they look for real hackers and account stackers than someone who takes a box to their parents for a few weeks.

It's not much different than taking one to the lake house or RV for a week.

correct! D* does not care if you move a box in this manner for a few weeks. If they did they would camp out at every college football stadium on saturday during football season. They would clean up there

I'm doing the same thing for the superbowl. I'm taking my HR-20 over to the party ,because where the party is they don't have HD locals. Whats funny were are 7 miles away but in a different DMA. OH well ,People can call it what they want, but I still have to pay my bill,so who cares? If your doing something and not paying for it ,I could see the problem.

Hemi,
I have had to explain why one side of the street gets Philadelphia locals and the other gets Baltimore.
I always wonder if they share.

One county in PA gets New York locals only. (Pike County)I'm right on the border of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre DMA and NY.So I can almost pick what I want since my Address can have either depending on exact location.

Im telling you Dtv dose care, that’s a fact. He asked if its legal and you all said yes just dont let them know your doing it LOL! The fact remains they do care and they will do something about it if they can (hard to prove)

Look at your contract people your receivers are only authorized for one home period, if you are not authorized to use the receiver at your parents house then its signal theft point blank, and DERICTV dose view it as theft, that’s also a fact not an opinion. You want to argue with me about that’s fine but it wont change DTV’s policy’s regarding the issue.

milkman, while you may be correct on the down to the letter technical terms of the contract, D* does not care if you move a reciever for a few days(such as to tailgate, or a month as in the OP's case). If they did, many people would be "in jail" as you stated or without service. He is still paying his contractual obligations and isnt stealing one cent. So to try to scare him with your bold outrageous statements is pointless, and im not sure what you are trying to accomplish.

Edit: i hate when people point out spelling and grammar errors(lord knows i make them), but when you are trying to make a point and want to sound at least halfway believable, you should at least put forth the effort to make your statements as error free as possible. The fact that you dont takes away some credibility with me
