Kanye West's Torrent of Criticism, Live on NBC

By Lisa de Moraes

Why We Love Live Television, Reason No. 137:

NBC's levee broke and Kanye West flooded through with a tear about the federal response in New Orleans during the network's live concert fundraiser for victims of Hurricane Katrina last night.

The rapper was among the celebs and singers participating in the one-hour special, produced by NBC News and run on the NBC broadcast network, as well as MSNBC and CNBC, because, hey, the numbers couldn't be any worse than usual on a Friday night and hopefully they'd raise a chunk of change for a good cause, the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Among the performers, Faith Hill sang "There Will Come a Time," which included the lyrics, "The darkness will be gone, the weak shall be strong. Hold on to your faith." Aaron Neville performed Randy Newman's "Louisiana 1927" with its chorus: "They're trying to wash us away, they're trying to wash us away."

West was not scheduled to perform; he was one of the blah, blah, blahers, who would read from scripts prepared by the network about the impact of Katrina on southern Louisiana and Mississippi.

West and Mike Myers had been paired up to appear about halfway through the show. Their assignment: Take turns reading a script describing the breach in the levees around New Orleans.

Myers: The landscape of the city has changed dramatically, tragically and perhaps irreversibly. There is now over 25 feet of water where there was once city streets and thriving neighborhoods.

(Myers throws to West, who looked extremely nervous in his super-preppy designer rugby shirt and white pants, which is not like the arrogant West and which, in retrospect, should have been a tip-off.)

West: I hate the way they portray us in the media. You see a black family, it says, "They're looting." You see a white family, it says, "They're looking for food." And, you know, it's been five days [waiting for federal help] because most of the people are black. And even for me to complain about it, I would be a hypocrite because I've tried to turn away from the TV because it's too hard to watch. I've even been shopping before even giving a donation, so now I'm calling my business manager right now to see what is the biggest amount I can give, and just to imagine if I was down there, and those are my people down there. So anybody out there that wants to do anything that we can help -- with the way America is set up to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off, as slow as possible. I mean, the Red Cross is doing everything they can. We already realize a lot of people that could help are at war right now, fighting another way -- and they've given them permission to go down and shoot us!

(West throws back to Myers, who is looking like a guy who stopped on the tarmac to tie his shoe and got hit in the back with the 8:30 to La Guardia.)

Myers: And subtle, but in many ways even more profoundly devastating, is the lasting damage to the survivors' will to rebuild and remain in the area. The destruction of the spirit of the people of southern Louisiana and Mississippi may end up being the most tragic loss of all.

(And, because Myers is apparently as dumb as his Alfalfa hair, he throws it back to West.)

West: George Bush doesn't care about black people!

(Back to Myers, now looking like the 8:30 to La Guardia turned around and caught him square between the eyes.)

Myers: Please call . . .

At which point someone at NBC News finally regained control of the joystick and cut over to Chris Tucker, who started right in with more scripted blah, blah, blah.

"Tonight's telecast was a live television event wrought with emotion," parent company NBC Universal said in a statement issued to the Reporters Who Cover Television after the broadcast.

"Kanye West departed from the scripted comments that were prepared for him, and his opinions in no way represent the views of the networks. It would be most unfortunate if the efforts of the artists who participated tonight and the generosity of millions of Americans who are helping those in need are overshadowed by one person's opinion."

West's comments would be cut from the West Coast feed, an NBC spokeswoman told The TV Column. (The Associated Press later reported that only his comment about the president was edited out.) The show was live on the East Coast with a several-second delay; someone with his finger on a button was keeping an ear peeled in case someone uttered an obscenity but did not realize that West had gone off-script, the spokeswoman said.

I didn't watch it. But I give West credit for saying what he believes and waiting till he had an opportunity to reach a lot of people to say it. But it's nothing that I haven't heard countless people say already. Not a big deal in my opinion, but it elevates my opinion of West a little -- now I think he's slightly less of a moron, I guess.

West: George Bush doesn't care about black people!

this is all i saw on last nights news and meyers face was priceless.

that really pissed me off when my wife told me what happened. he said what he did for personel gain. to me that shows he could give two spits about the people affected. he clearly said it to get his name out their to sell his album. no one should use a forum to help others for personel gain. that's what he did, plain an simple. does not matter if it is a republican pres or democrat. what he said is just plain idiotic.

he will get his five minutes of fame, i hope he enjoys being booed off the stage. in my opinion, he has just joined the likes of the dixie chicks and richard gere. they get booed everywhere now for making stupid statements.

in my opionion, he is an ass hole for making those statements on an event meant for helping people.

i dont feel he was off base just look at the difference

just shows how some in the press treat the different races differently. Also if bush didnt go an make a war with iraq on false premises, we would have more of our troops here to help in the recovery effort.

Can't imagine him getting booed off any stage any time soon. His record will likely debut at number one and go on to sell millions and millions of copies. He'll sell out arenas and be cheered wildly ... I suspect a lot of his audience agrees with his statements and respects him for voicing what they're thinking. Maybe we'll find out next year when he's making the rounds of the award-show circuit collecting his hardware.

The problem isnt that we dont have troops. The problem is that the governor of the state didnt request them soon enough. And the situation wasnt secure enough on the ground for FEMA to act. Change the laws of the state and allow the President to act more freely. But dont blame Bush for the negligence of the state governor. That governor also has the power to request national guard troops from other states, but she was late on that too.

Absolutely right.

All I can say is I've never heard of Kanye West. I see he's a "recording artist" of music I never listen to...

I'll keep an eye out for clips of this on the news though, as I'd love to see Mike Myers' reactions. :)

correct me if im wrong but as president hes the commander in chief, he can put troops wherever he wants. They knew before this ever hit that it was going to be a national disaster, they should have started making provisions then.

funny you should say that. i never heard of him until the shooting of suge knight at west's party. that was last week when i first heard of him.

the guy is a loser. i would be saying that no matter what president was in office. he should not said what he did where he said it. now if he said it on one of his records, fine, he has the right. when he uses the forum he did for personel gain, which he did, taking away from what was trying to be accomplished, then he was wrong.

Maybe we are now seeing why there hasn't been a female president as of yet. Not saying that a woman couldn't handle the job, but let us all thank whichever god we recognize that it wasn't nor ever will be this governor from Louisiana! I don't know of which side of the isle is hails from, but whichever one it is, they should revoke her membership! ;) :D :yes

"We already realized a lot of the people that could help are at war right now, fighting another way, and they've given them permission to go down and shoot us."

Isnt this what the governor of the state wanted? She threatened the looters with this on TV. And now he's using this to criticize Bush?

if the watched tv, they knew it was going to hit somewhere along that gulf coast, and the could have gotten some help at least in the area to get into the affect areas quicker. Also it would not have been so bad if the levee systems were better built and YES they have know about this for YEARS, and did nothing about it.

They do have tv's but they don't have Dish Network. They have one of the other one's that suck! :D ;) :p

Kayne West seems to be the real racist here and even worse, using publicity during the disaster to try to further his career.

As far as the government knowing this was a disaster... I first blame the Mayor of New Orleans, he was a total failure in both preparing the city, how he enforced the mandatory evacuations, and how he handled the crisis afterwards. Now he tries to blame everything on the Feds. What a joke.
