Just ordered HR34, have a few questions please

so how is it run from the power inserter?

a 2 way splitter with one cable ot the CCK and one to the HR34? If so just hook the cable from the PI (power inserter) directly to the HR34 bypassing all splitters (like I say my CCK was hooked up for maybe 15 minutes so I dont remember exactly how it was hooked up) ;)

the only coax cable on my CCK runs from the CCK to the "signal to IRD", there is no cable that runs from CCK to HR34

Right. So the cable goes from the SWM splitter(outside) to the power supply then to the CCK? That's how my installer did mine as he said they were told not to put the power inserter on a DVR drop and I didn't want it in the other bedrooms. Unscrew the wire from the signal to IRD off of the power supply. Power off the CCK. You may want to get a terminator and terminate that open port now. Then do the process I was talking about.

I had 2 coax lines running to the living room from before i had the swm installed. he took 1 of those lines and ran it directly my hr34. the other one he connected to the "power to swm" port on the power inserter, then connected my CCK to the "signal to IRD" port on the inserter.

so if i'm understanding you guys correctly, i can just unhook the coax from the "signal to IRD" port and leave that port empty. then i can just unplug my CCK and completely remove it. it will not hurt anything to have the "signal to IRD port" left empty"?

oh he did it THAT way ;)

oh crap I forgot you needed a SWM16 which has a separate power plug on the splitter. If you had a 8 way splitter only (under 8 tuners) the PI would have been run inline

yup.

yup.

I hope you're not saying splitter ports equal tuners. ;) The SWM16 power can still be run in line. You have the option to run it off leg #1 or you can run it directly to the power port. It looks like his is run off leg#1.

no it sounds like they used the separate power port for it

ok, just took the CCK completely off and left the "signal to IRD" port empty.

Technically no. But I've seen them run fine, it is a potential spot for interference to enter the coax system though. A terminator would correct the issue or minimizing the splitters totally removing the port is the best option.

If it were my install I'd have it setup like this to minimize any issues with MRV signal:

Leg #1 of SWM16 - 2 way splitter - one to each 2 tuner DVR (power inserter on one of these DVR's)
Leg #2 of SWM16 - no splitters - directly run to the SWM16

I've seen an install where the MRV would not pass through the SWM16 due to the loss associated with the splitters on each leg, cable runs, and internal MRV bridge in the SWM16. You can check your signal strength to the various nodes in the home. I think it's press guide and right at the same time(sometimes tricky) on the front panel of the receiver, then picking Coax network or something like that. If you could post these numbers it would be helpful.

what is "signal to IRD" anyways?

normally that would go directly to the receiver.
If you have less than 8 tuners (like I did) the setup is different. You only need one cable from the LNB to the splitter. One of the outputs say "power pass" and has a red arrow. The power inserter is put in line between the splitter and the reciever

ok, MRV appears to be working in all rooms. internet seems to be working in all rooms, i just downloaded an On demand show in each room to test it ans they all worked.

so am i ok to just leave things how they are now?

is a cap and a terminator the same thing? like this?

He had two original lines for the previous DVR. One went to the HR34. The other went to port one on the SWM splitter(power passing), which tied into the power inserter. Then the power insterter went to the CCK.

i just took some time checking in the basement and it appears it is set up like this-

Leg #2 on SWM16 to 8way splitter- 2 lines out of that 8 way. 1 to HR21 and 1 to HR22

Leg #1 on SWM16 to another 8 way splitter- 1 line out of that 8 way splitter to back of my HR34

DC power port on SWM16 to "power to SWM" port in power inserter

all seems to be working well now so i guess it's ok. i did leave the CCK connected via coax to the "signal to ird" just until tomorrow when i can get to radio shack and get a terminator. but i did disconenct the CCK form wall AC power. thanks for all your help everyone.

if you feel adventurous you can remove that splitter since the HR34 is the only thing on it. Both outputs (leg 1 & 2) carries 8 channels. So removing that takes one less piece out of the equation if there are issues
