Just ordered HR34, have a few questions please

if you feel adventurous you can remove that splitter since the HR34 is the only thing on it. Both outputs (leg 1 & 2) carries 8 channels. So removing that takes one less piece out of the equation if there are issues

ok. other than that does it appear to be wired correctly now?

yup looks fine. He could have used a 4 way splitter or even a 2 way on the other side but thats fine.

Dumb question....on the 8 way splitters any unused port has a terminator on it...why not use one of those off that splitter for the port on the power inserter?
(since they used 3 outputs did the installer leave those terminators them with you? Mine did)

Good call! I just went through the HR34 box that he left behind and found a terminator in it. Saved me a trip to the store and now i can just cap it. you guys are great!

Edited to add- I wish you guys all lived closer, would love to buy you a beer ( or pop) for all the help! :nicethread:

sounds good that the installer left those "extra parts" because it saved you some money (radio shack parts aint cheap) ;)

i just took some time checking in the basement and it appears it is set up like this-

Leg #2 on SWM16 to 8way splitter- 2 lines out of that 8 way. 1 to HR21 and 1 to HR22

Leg #1 on SWM16 to another 8 way splitter- 1 line out of that 8 way splitter to back of my HR34

DC power port on SWM16 to "power to SWM" port in power inserter

all seems to be working well now so i guess it's ok. i did leave the CCK connected via coax to the "signal to ird" just until tomorrow when i can get to radio shack and get a terminator. but i did disconenct the CCK form wall AC power. thanks for all your help everyone.

I was about to say do the same.

Are you serious???!?!?!?!?!? Two 8 ways on 3 receiver install?! WOW!! Must be one of those installers that are hung up on the myth that you need 8 ports for the 8 tuners on each leg. That's a huge drop in signal for MRV. Just think when you hit play on something from another receiver it drops around 14db at the 8 way. Down the cable (let's say 50 foot...4db loss). To the SWM16, across the bridge in SWM16 (around 4db loss). Down the other leg (4db loss), to another 8 way taking a huge hit of another 14db. If I had to bet, if you check your MRV stats screen your probably 40 or worse if not more. Although I hear it works up to 60...the thing about db's is it's not a linear scale. 14+4+4+4+14=40db loss or more. That's huge in my eyes and I definitely wouldn't have it if it was my system.

Here's how I would have it setup. PI-29 power supply on coax straight to power input port on SWM16(at least 10-15 foot coax) since you have an extra leg (no need to terminate PI-29 if it is on power port). HR34 connected straight to the SWM 16 2nd leg (9-16). The other two DVR's connected to a SWM 2 way splitter. The issue of this goofy 16 port setup for 3 receivers might be causing MRV stuttering or some other weird signal issues in the future would never cross my mind after correcting it to 3 ports like it should be.

I'm very curious to see your Coax Network stats. "pressing the front panel guide and right arrow buttons simultaneously (it can be tricky but I usually hold the right arrow down with one finger and then press the guide button). Select "coax network status". The first screen will show each device and the physical levels, which should all be less than 60."

Ok i did that from my living room receiver (HR34) and it showed the other 2 DVR's at -36. it said there were 0 dropped sessions. it's been working great since you guys got me fixed up earlier today.

If i have issues i can replace the 8 way with a 2 way and just hook the 34 directly to the SWM. but since it's all working great now i'm tempted to just leave it alone.

I'm right down the road !

one other thing (to kinda change the subject) if you get a AM21 for your antenna project (the Toledo locals) note that even though the HR34 has 5 tuners the AM21 only has 2 so you can record up to 2 OTA programs at once (and then 3 sat programs too)

so you could record
5 sat 0 OTA
4 sat 1 OTA
3 sat 2 OTA
maximum at one time

bought an attic antenna last night and jsut hooked it up to see what i can get inside. i am picking up

11.1 TOLEDO CBS
11.2 METV
13.1 TOLEDO ABC
13.2 LIVE WELL NETWORK
13.3 TOLEDO WEATHER
24.1 TOLEDO NBC
24.2 RETRO TV
30.1 TOLEDO PBS
30.2 FAMILY NETWORK (NOT SURE WHAT THIS IS)
30.3 CREATE (AGAIN, NOT SURE WHAT THIS IS)
36.1 TOLEDO FOX
36.2 COOL TV

so if i buy the am21n and connect it to the hr34, the 34 should scan and pick all of these up even if they are not int the directv database, correct?

yup. But looking at the list I have they all are in the database so you'll have guide info too

WTOLDT 11.1
WTOLDT2 11.2
WTOLDT3 11.3
WTVGDT 13.1
WTVGDT2 13.2
WTVGDT3 13.3
WNWODT 24.1
WNWODT2 24.2
WGTEDT 30.1
WGTEDT2 30.2
WGTEDT3 30.3
WUPWDT 36.1
WUPWDT2 36.2
WLMBDT 40.1

once you get it, just plug in a zip for Toledo and it will load them properly

30.2 FAMILY NETWORK (NOT SURE WHAT THIS IS)
looks like reruns of PBS stuff...probably geered towards family programming

30.3 CREATE (AGAIN, NOT SURE WHAT THIS IS)
Create airs mainly how-to, cooking, DIY, and other non-commercial educational television shows from the libraries of Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and American Public Television

good to know, thanks for the info
