From an IT/Network perspective I dont see why not...however, both locations would need a fast connection

Nope it won't work. I know people who even tried over a VPN.
Even if it did work you would need a fast internet connection with at least 15 mbps up for it to work without breaking up constantly.

Am going to have to disagree w/ you on that one chief. Unless it has some anti-whatever security, someone with some serious networking skills
could probably pull it off.
You forget where you are at. If it could be done you would have seen it posted here. 
Sad part is I couldn't even use VPN to put my iPad on the same network as my Hopper with Sling so I could transfer a show to my iPad that I forgot.

All the mad skills can't overcome the limitations of consumer broadband Internet service.
The solution to this problem comes in the form of a place-shifting device. Based on what I understand of Slingloaded DISH DVRs and the client-side support they require, a standalone Slingbox connected to a Joey may make for a better solution.
You can also use the Dish Anywhere app (if your Hopper has Sling built-in or add-on) and send it to your TV with a cable or an Apple TV box from iPad or iPhone.
I did say someone "with serious networking skills" (ie- a chap w/ a CCIE who'd make both of us look like amateurs).
Anywho, we can argue this on the next cruise (if it works out). Loser buys a round then goes down the water slide!
Actually it works fine over a VPN. I had tested it before and just set it up again this morning in case things had changed. Wireless USB Joey <-> Remote Router <-> VPN <-> Home Router <-> HWS. It is as functional as any Ethernet connected Joey. Can link between Hoppers, VOD access, App acces, etc, etc.
I won't get into details because legitimate uses may not exist, but it does work. I will say I did nothing special or exotic and used commonly available $30 routers and firmware.

One of the "gotchas" I ran into with residential-class routers was the inability to set up the same subnet on both ends of the VPN connection. Maybe there was a way to do it, but I gave up trying to find that and just set up different subnets at each end. I expect that would break Joey functionality.
