I would like to hook up a pair of speakers because the speaker on the Vizio TV in our workout room is not sufficient. A Joey feeds this TV via HDMI. Is the audio Component connections also active when using the HDMI connection?

Yes, it is. For better audio, if you tv has optical audio out, use that to an amp and mute the internal tv speakers. You will need an amp, anyway, to use the composite audio out, which is inferrior to the optical audio out.

Not coming from TV optical out. Will only pass stereo just like composites. It's only DD from the TV's own tuner, not input devices.

Optical out from JOEY to the receiver/amp would be best. For a workout room, stereo (no 5.1) analog audio from the Joey may be sufficient.
