My 722 was annoyingly freezing and skipping when watching recording for last few days. I decided to reset it by unplugging for 10 minutes to see if it fix problem. When restarted it showed ''311'' error message. Upon google/searching it sounds like hard drive is dying. My receiver:

  • is only 4-5 months old
  • sitting in open (not in enclosure).
  • It gets really hot ...hot enough to raise 12 x 12 room temperature.
  • I am still in 9 month DHPP; since I signed 2yr contract
  • DVR button no longer works. It says unable to access....
  • what is life expectency of it? TIVO at dad's going 4 years strong...
My concern is there anyway I can resurrect hard drive so I can perhaps backup on external HD (anyway to have dish waive activation fee for it since their reciever is dying...)

I really hate a thought of exchanging it for another since I have 60+ timers/dish pass and 100+ recordings...

Unplugging the power cord of your reciever for one minute and then re-plugging may resolve the issue

I was afraid it is gonna come to this. Time to get haggled by polite CSR...

HDD's and shipping. A crap shoot. There are many Dish DVR's that last for years, however, there are always a minority number of DVR's that have an HDD that may die before it should. I have to say that having owned several models of Dish DVR's over the years, all have lasted more than 3 years. My 508 was still running for 5+ until I traded it in.

I can't wait until solid state drives become the norm. I would think that they would solve most of the issues we see with hard drives today.

Standard PC hard drives have a failure rate of about 10% in the first year (source: Kim Kommando). Assuming these DVR drives are slightly higher quality maybe with a first year failure rate of 3% that still makes for a dozen or so unhappy subs per year.

dish CSR confirmed that hard drive has gone bad. while I asked them for more information on external hard drive for backup purposes, coloradio ''technical'' CSR said it is free of charge to use it. As far as I remember there was $40 charge for it. Is it free now? I cant find info since dish has redesigned their website.

Sony and Sandisk have just announced 2TB memory stick and SD cards to be released later this year. Lets see when it when flash drive TB DVR comes out. Actually sandisk has DVR that records on flash drive for $99.

For triple price ?!

I agree but price is gonna come down faster we then we think.

I remember paying $40 for 128mb for microSD back in late 2004. I used to called transflash back then. Now nobody wants it even for free...caz you can get 4Gb for less $10-12.
