I tried the 1st beta and it was really bad, didn't enable the 'cloud' option, and then sat out the next 2-3 betas, by which time they pulled it. Nonetheless, I read from a lot of people that they had no issues with it either, like your experience. Apple must have uncovered some issue way down deep that forced them to pull it though....
While Apple claims "on average" half the size the real-life advantage may not be all that exciting.

Given the almost complete incompatibility with other platforms and software titles, HEIF/HEIC has a rough road ahead. Then there the issue of loading them on older iDevices that don't have the hardware HEVC acceleration that only the A11 offers.
According to a comparison between HEIF and JPEG at phonearena.com, if you download images from iCloud or Google Photos to your computer, they will be converted to JPEG in recognition of the fact that computer support for the format isn't here (and according to some, may not be forthcoming).

Not all new codecs will be standard in the future, but h265 is likely to be here to stay. I would not bet against it. Remember what Apple said- They are building for the future. When you see Adobe jump on board with h265, it will be a day when Ultra High def will be able to navigate older slower hardware.
As I understand, encoding is the problem requiring faster hardware as it takes much longer to encode vs h264. However, decoding is faster and frame by frame throughput is where the advantage lies.
As one who still works in video as a hobby, I welcome the future!

I have no doubt of h.265 for video content but I sincerely doubt that its future is assured in stills.
I think this is another bit of misinformation. The higher the compression, the more horsepower it takes to both encode and decode. The whole "faster" thing is more about smaller files becoming available to the decoder sooner than larger files.
Naysayers aren't against a new format that saves lots of space without sacrificing quality, but they want it to be free of "encumberances". HEIF requires licenses from both the MPEG and Nokia. Nokia defers the h.265 part of it to MPEG in their license agreement and Nokia's code is restricted to personal, academic and research use.
If the only place these pictures can be "worked on" involves converting them to somewhat larger JPEG files, what's the point? Are people forced to leave them in the cloud until such time as the format actually catches on? What do they do in the interim?
I stood up early in the HEIF discussion and said that Apple needed to be much more active in getting the HEIF standard adopted before they made it the default. While not proprietary, HEIF might as well be and Apple has done absolutely nothing to pave the way for the software companies that could produce the software to take advantages of the advancements that HEIF represents.
Let's not forget about WebP and Google's Zopfli and Guetzli encoders that improve significantly on PNG and JPEG file sizes.
I get that you're trying to bend the HEIF discussion around to HEVC, but that's not what we were talking about.
It worked for me without problems, but disappeared after the first beta I had installed, an I waited a bit on making the jump.
I reached a breaking point last weekend and Reset to Factory on my iPhone 6. I restored the backup and after getting a few security items reinstalled, I'm back in business. The big complaint was how slow my iPhone 6 was doing simple things like opening the camera to take a picture, going into iMessage and waiting for the keyboard to appear after I pressed into the text entry field. It just felt very laggy doing what used to be fluid motions. I figured it would help, but my iPhone is still acting up (in other words, slow).
Options? Since it is not yet three years old, I'd like to hold out until next year and see if the iPhone 8s or iPhone X.I adds the LTE Band 72 support missing from this year's models. If I can't make it that long, I would probably end up with the 128G iPhone 7 since the iPhone 8 and iPhone X have received bad marks for the drop tests and the iPhone 7 seems like the best compromise. I'd rather get the 64 GB version, but Apple doesn't sell that anymore.
And now there is this weird bug in iMessage where the Predictive Text comes up with an "A" next to a box with a Question Mark inside:
This is supposed to be a capital "I". The workaround for now is to go into Settings, General, Keyboard, Text Mapping, and add a mapping from a lowercase "i" to an uppercase "I". It still looks weird in the prediction, but if you accidentally press it it will insert an uppercase "I" in your message.

I finally put 11 on my 6+ today. First thing I noticed is I can’t turn off the clicking noise while typing like I used to.

My 6 Plus is the same way. I have a word half typed before it shows in the text box. Was thinking about wiping it, to see if that helps. Guess you saved me the trouble.

The swype keyboard has been avail on iphone for many years.I keep reading about this text bug and didn't understand why I don't see it.... I use Google's keyboard. Years of being on Android and having a 'swipe' keyboard spoiled me and I CAN'T use a non-swiping keyboard.

I know this is an older post but I just saw it. I highly recommend checking out Pocket Casts. It costs $3 or $4 but it is well worth the cost. It has a great design and it is quite a bit more powerful than the default podcast app. Unlike some of the other podcast apps they still use Apple’s podcast API so every podcast available in iTunes is available on Pocket Casts. They don’t have to be submitted by the podcaster to the Pocket Cast store. You can also manually add RSS feeds if you subscribe to premium podcasts.
It has a lot of great features that aren’t in the default app. If you have a podcast that always has a few minutes of ads and fluff at the beginning you can set that subscription to automatically start playing episodes at any time stamp you choose. It also has a feature that can automatically trim silence. I don’t even notice it happening but the stats section says it has saved me 1 day and 12 hours by doing this.
My absolute favorite thing about Pocket Casts is the “up next” feature. Up next is basically an automated playlist feature that will automatically play the next episode on my list when the episode I’m currently listening to ends.
This feature allows me to set specific podcast subscriptions to go to the top or bottom of my up next list whenever there are new episodes. I set time sensitive podcasts like ESPN’s Fantasy Focus Football to automatically add new episodes to the top of the list. I set some other podcast subscriptions to automatically add new episodes to the bottom of the list. I also choose not to add other subscriptions to the up next list at all and just play those ones whenever I feel like it. You also have the option to manually add individual episodes to the list and drag episodes up or down if you want to change the playback order.
If you make a free account you can sync with other iOS and android devices as well as the web player. I think this works with Alexa and Google home too but I haven’t tested those.
Anyways, sorry for the long winded post but I have been using Pocket Casts for about a year now and I highly recommend it to anyone who doesn’t like the new default podcast app. Even if you do it’s worth looking in to.
Thanks for sharing. That is interesting and I'll look into it. Can it just automatically play the next episode in the individual podcast you are in or do you have to set it up to "send" episodes to your list in an order. I listen to lots of podcasts, but I don't want to skip around between them. Basically I want each podcast to act like it's own world, where if I click on it it will play the oldest episode first and then continue on to the next one when that finishes.
I just took a quick look and I don’t see a way to make it just play all episodes from a single podcast subscription. If you don’t have episodes in your up next list it might just do this by default but I can’t say for sure since I always have more episodes in my list.
One workaround you could use is to not set any podcast subscriptions to automatically add episodes to the up next list. Then you can manually add as many episodes as you want to the up next list. Unfortunately this doesn’t sound much different from manually setting up playlists in the default podcast app.
I still say that Pocket Casts is much better than the default podcast app. It comes with many features that aren’t in Apple’s app and the UI looks great. I’m just not sure whether it will do what you want it to any better than the default app.
And what ? Does Apple own Nuance but left the original iOS keyboard in place ?
I personally don’t like the swipe style keyboards. So I use the standard. But it is an option for those who want it.
