Okay, I have DirecTV at my house, did a self install..

I am in the process of wiring my parents house, I want to do the whole install myself if possible, is there any way to do this with DirecTV any more?

Anyone know if Value Electronics will do this anymore as well? (I got mine through VE)

I already have a Phase 3 dish for them (they arent going HD) so all I need are a 4 (or 5) x 8 and the recievers....

Discuss...?

It is all done by account numbers. You have an account with DTV and they would have offered you a free installation. If you move they will help with that.

They will want a different account for a different address for your parents. If the account will be in your parents name they can have a free installation.

It goes like that. If you start adding receivers to your account for different addresses you could get in deep do do with them. They have a right to know who they are dealing with and where their equipment is located.

Call them. If you don't like what you are told........call back and start over with a different CSR (Call Center Representative).

I know it will be a new account for them Im not circumventing the system at all in this case..

I just want to do a self install for their house... I have no problem calling D* and lying that a pro installed it...but im not going to circumvent any of their rules and regs.


I jsut dont want an installer coming to their house and trying to put up a new dish (I have a phase 3 an installer gave me a while back) when I have a dish up and pointed and the hosue completely wired jsut need recievers plugged in and activated...

IF I could order from VE and get the recievers in and jsut call D* to activate a NEW ACCOUNT for my parents... it would be fine..

Note that my house is 6 miles away in a different zip.. I am not trying to do anything illegal or immoral, merely get the recievers and activate them without having to shcedule a tech to come out.

You can run all the wires, and even get a mount to pre-install, but there is no reason NOT to have the system completed by an installer. You will need to make sure you have the right cable, the proper means to ground the system and access to the dish location must be reasonable.

waiting for several days for an installer when I can get the recievers overnight.

The only use for the installer for our situation is to walk in connect the receivers and call directv.... thats it.

Todd is giving good advice based ona perfect world. There is a good chance the tech DTV sends will be able to do all the stuff required. Or not.
I have rolled in on jobs where the customer has set the whole thing up but everything is wrong.On others I have stood in aw of the craftsmanship.
But why take a chance? It the receiver is defective or some fitting needs attention it is an easy fix. Why not place the TVs where you want them and plan a spot for the receivers? Let the tech fill in the blanks? Also grounding materials are hard to obtain except through installation companies.......have him change out your ground block and outside fittings,,,stuff like that.

Ive installed a few systems

Not to say im perfect or anything... but the amount of money that we would have to pay the tech... wow... Looking at 8 wall fishes depending on if he has single or dual coax... and we are fishing into existing in wall boxes... i have a fiber fish that will do it wish moderate ease..

I have tons of RG6 Quad Sheild and Compression ends DS6 (with a letter on the end i believe its Q)

I have already got the Gound Blocks from D* through an earlier install (they sent an installer for my HR10-250 box when I had the Dish up, Grounded, coax grounded... etc the guy handed me the dish about 200 feet of dual coax and 6 gound blocks)..

Did I mention Im a professional Low Voltage installer? as In I wire networks and coax camera networks quite a bit...

Ill be honest I trust myself more than an installer since it is my fathers house.

All that said Ive spoken to a dealer who said we could do the self install and if we run into trouble have an installer come out... no sweat

Plus we are looking at a pole mount and conduit running under gravel.

I Will certify the cable runs with my Omni before I call to get the equiment shipped.

DTV will activate any equipment with correct numbers. There was a brief peoiod when they said they would insist on an SBCA number but that has passed. DTV will only pay for the basic installation anyway. Many of the techs they will send think wall fishes swim.
Call DTV when you get a picture on channel 100. Also I can get you a date with the lady on channel 201.........he and I were in the Marines together.

thanks joe... we are dont with the upstairs tvs this evening.. basement is tomorrow....

considering we had to use a fiber fish for one of the drops (i dont think a lot of installers carry these) im very glad we did it... looks great so far... going to finish all inside tomorrow and next weekend we will do the outside stuff...
