I HATE Google Assistant

W

hy would I want to disables feature that was the whole reason I got Dish in the first place? I don’t want to control my lights or thermostat with a freaking tv remote. That’s what apps are for.
One device in your hand vs multiple apps you have to scroll to look for.

I don't know why some people are having issues. Mine works perfectly well, Anytime I hear of problems with something that requires internet, which the voice functions do, my instincts say it's the internet provider and their equipment that isn't compatible with Hoppers, like Cable company Gateways

I really despise the fact that Dish sold out to Google for the voice remote , Google is just as bad as Facebook all these companies collecting data on people these days. I don't dare activate it on my Hopper, last thing I want is Google knowing what TV shows I watch or Record.

I get it, but Google doesn't know anything(supposedly) unless you sign into Google assistant on your phone, and link it to your hopper. I was playing around with it yesterday, and it's actually pretty cool. I told my remote to "show me my photos," and the pictures from my phone showed up on my tv. I said, "make it warmer," and it adjusted my thermostat. Asking for movies and TV shows have been almost perfect. I really wish I could get it to show the driveway or doorbell cameras when I ask. Hope that feature is still coming..

Well I believed it was a really dumb idea from the gitgo to integrate Google and I haven't read anything to dispell that belief. It's just another example of a solution to a non-existent problem. Thanks but no thanks.

I don't like Google either, don't use the voice command much anyway. However, I certainly can see why DISH did this integration. DISH is constantly being criticized on this forum for not doing enough to stay a viable business. Everyone says they need to change their business model or they won't be around for long.

So, DISH takes on cellular, gets criticized. DISH takes on new service agreements like with Samsung appliance repair to keep their employees employed, gets criticized. DISH tries to compete on the streaming level, gets criticized. DISH tries to expand their flagship receiver to be a whole house command center through Google Assistant, gets criticized.

So, most everyone agrees that the old satellite TV service model won't work for much longer, but then DISH gets criticized for trying to do something about it.

Dish just needs to be careful they don't get caught up in the increasing number of inquiries and investigations into the misuse of personal data. Facebook and Google might have the resources to pay the hefty fines being levied, not sure Dish does.

Probably different things. FB was the most insidious by allowing Cambridge Analytica to have access to users so they could build profiles that they used to manipulate how people would possibly vote based on targeted data on FB. Google is using data for targeted advertising, which is also manipulative, but in how people spend money, mostly and if you have an Android, you most likely have a Google account, so you're already filling Data Bases with everything you do and every where you go. Since the Hopper is only used for watching TV or listening to Music, I'd say it's the least intrusive, albeit still intrusive

I understand why Dish is offering these products. I personally have NO use for google anything. I don't want ANY smart products in my home. I don't want a video doorbell when I can look out the window, I don't want a refrigerator that tells me when to buy things. I can work a light switch, and I have a programmable thermostat so I don't have to adjust that by asking google or alexa. I don't use any of Google's services (email, storage, electronics). I know they probably already have a bunch of information about me, but I am not going to give them any more voluntarily. I do not see the advantage of ME being the product for their business model. They manipulate search information so that you see things that they "deem acceptable", and then deny it to congress. So no thanks to anything google.

Yeah, I got a little wordy there. I just don't understand people sacrificing a lot of their personal information and a lot of privacy for free some stuff.

You're right of course. My point was that nobody can predict the future. I doubt that 5 or 10 years ago Facebook and Google foresaw the threatened governmental oversight being threatened in the name of privacy, especially in Europe. If Dish stops with Google Assistant they can blame Google for any issues, but who knows where they will go in the future. Just something a company lacking very deep pockets needs to keep in mind.

The alternative for voice control would be for Dish to develop their own solution which would not be cost effective compared to partnering with Google to provide the voice recognition back-end. Plus even if Dish did their own solution then many of the Dish users would be clamoring for it to be compatible with Alexa or Google. Definitely more cost efficient and most probably a better product by using the existing Google infrastructure.

Bottom Line: Why re-invent the wheel?
