HR21 Confusion

I am considering switching to D*. I have a land line in my house but was going to cancel telephone service and use my cell phone. I have a cable internet connection. I am considering getting 4 HDDVRs and was told by a local satellite dealer in town that the HDDVR would "not work" unless either a phone line or an ethernet connection was connected. He told me that any software updates and guide info was sent to the receiver via the phone line or ethernet connection. Is this true? I thought all updates and guide info was downlinked from the satellite. Is D* different than E*?

Not true, Updates Download from the satellite. You don't need any phone or ethernet hooked up. But you wont be able to order PPV through your remote. Or use Directv on Demand without Ethernet and High speed internet. But thats it . Tv viewing will be un interupted
