HR20 Cooling

In the first week back on line, my HR20 hit 123, is now currently at 120 degrees in a enclosed ent center. How is this for the unit?(never had it enclosed before)

I also have a thermaltake usb fan that was used for the ViP 722. Any recommendation on whether to use it or not? If so, where?

I use a modified PCI Card slot fan taped to the right side rear of my HR20-100 pulling out. I brought it over from my 622HZ smok'n hot ATT/Dish/HZ box.

You cannot put an HR20-100 on a laptop pad as its fan is underneath and pulls into the box and pushes out the side vents. A laptop cooler would oppose it. HR20-700's have a different airflow pattern so it depends on your box.

Some argue here auxiliary cooling is unnecessary but they haven't stopped me. My box is in a cabinet and is always in the mid-90's.

I've got a laptop cooling pad turned upside down set on top of my HR20. It works great! Sucks up through the unit. Keeps the temp anywhere from 99 to 105, depending on the temp of the house.
It's in an open front enclosure with a couple 2" diameter holes cut in the rear of it for running the wires. Very warm air is always coming out of the particular "slot" that the HR20 sits in.

I also have a laptop cooling pad. I think I have mine set so it blows on the HR20 instead of sucking it out. I'll have to check when I get home. Anyway, it works great. I went from about 125 deg down to 110. It has a usb connector that you just plug into the HR20.

You have NOTHING to worry about, it is in the normal operating range.
As long as it's not over 127* you are good to go.

The HR20-100's run cooler, but the normal temps for the -700 is 120* to 127*

Well, the Thermaltake USB fan I used for my 722 seems to be helping on the HR20.

I mimicked my 722 setup and raised the hr20 up about 1/2 higher to give it a little more air flow underneath. I then placed the usb fan at the left rear vents (if your facing the dvr) and have it pulling air out of the dvr. This morning, the dvr was sitting around 120 when I turned it on, then after a couple of hours of use it was running 123 then 125.

After changing the setup, it was 116 when I turned it on, and is still at 116 after 4 hours of run time. Will see if it holds. The top of the box is noticeably cooler.

Sounds like a HR20-700 which I think has holes on top. The HR20-100 has a solid top.

Yep. Put the laptop fan on top of your 700 and you're good. Jimbo is right also that yp to 127 degrees is considered normal

Well, the usb fan seems to be a good alternative. Cooling is down to 113 today, was down to 115 last night before bed. Will monitor and see how low it gets.

Ok. As it ran, and the house temp rose for the heat of the day, it peaked at 118. Still better than the 127 yesterday.

I decided to move the fan and have it blow down from the top in the back left corner(power supply area I think). I centered it over the open vents and turned it on full blast. Within one hour, the HR20 is at 109

You all realize that the HR20 for one never "shuts off" per se. All you do when you push the power button is put it in standby. As long as it's got power coming to it, it's "running".
The hard drive is what's always running.......

Uh, yeah. I assume it generates more heat while on, due to more draw on the PS. Its always much cooler when you first turn it on, rather than 3 hours later.

Been steady at 109 since 1300-1800, has since dropped to 107. Looking 109 during heat of day, will see what it gets down to by bedtime.
