I think I need to upgrade to a HR20 or HR21 box since the new HD channels will be moved to the Mpeg4. Will D* try and charge me for the new box?

They shouldnt, but you might have to play CSR roulette. I did and got two HR20's free (although it took a few calls) Good luck
Everyone has different experiences - read around, there are tons of threads on the subject.
I was offered $199 last week. I'm going to call again in the next day or two. If they offer me that again, I'll probably take it, although I'm going to ask if I qualify for any programming credits.
I just got a free HR20 in August, so am not counting on miracles (that was an H10 upgrade, not HR10) since I got a free one so recently.

I got a call and an e-mail to upgrade my HR10-250 for free from DirecTV a couple of weeks ago. My HR-21 was installed on 11/24, probably because I have out of market HD that is moving to the new sat.
