I think, even with leased receivers, you can occasionally suspend the account. I'd call DirecTV and explain your vacation or other plans and see what they say. If you want to suspend the account more than they're willing to live with then maybe DirecTV isn't the right choice for you.

As for the commitment, once the 2 years is up, that's it, you're free to cancel with no charge if you wish. If you add another receiver during your 2 yr commitment the 2 years starts over again, it's not in addition to any prior commitment.

Im 3 months into my 2yr comm and got a HDtv and want to upgrade from sd receiver to HD receiver, so by doing this my 2 yr comm would be extended 3 more months instead of being locked in for 4 yrs/

Correct, the 2 year clock resets back to the beginning, it doesn't add onto it making it 3 years 9 months in your case.
