help with Coolsat 4000 selecting LNB

I have 2 Coolsats, one a 4K and the other 5K. Today I plan to swing my dish over to Anik 107.3. I have both a linear and a universal LNB but I understand that with a universal, I will not be able to use a signal strength meter. In an case, I would prefer to try my linear first.

OK, went to the set up page for the satellite and do not see a linear as part of my choice selection. What is offered are:

Single

Universal

OCS

Legacy

Is the "Single" meant to be a linear?

This is my first time in True FTA so I want to keep it as simple as possible BEFORE going onto the roof.

Thanks--

interesting...mine doesn't have a "Legacy" or "OCS" option??
It has universal and single

Single for KU band
Universal for Universal

Iceberg-- THANK YOU for your PROMPT reply!!!

If I remember correctly, when I first set up the 4K, I set it for legacy's rather than DP's that could explain the difference is the LNB choices.

This is what I was after on Anik 107 as indicated available on LyngSat:

1) Sex TV---
2) Drive In Classics

but I don't want sex at all! Clicked on the description and it indicates there are local channels and specialty channels such as Access, Drive In Classics and so forth.

I have a REAL PROBLEM with my neighbor's trees and to control myself, I use the name Treelover. I HATE THE DAMNED THINGS! My window is limited to higher elevations-- over 25 degrees.

I do have a motor but had trouble getting it aligned and working in the dead of winter so its now sits in my basement.

OH--- I would like to get Galaxy 10 but I am afraid that is beyond what my "friendly trees" will allow.

Thanks--

Those channels use a different type of system. They use DCII (Digicipher II) whereas our boxes are DVB. Lyngsat has SexTV & Drive In Classics wrong on there. they are in freeview for StarChoice subs. So you'd have to have a SC subscription to get those.

Access, Knowledge, U of Alberta radio you can get with a previously subscribed StarChocie box

OH--- I would like to get Galaxy 10 but I am afraid that is beyond what my "friendly trees" will allow.
bummer that you can't get G10. :(

THANKS-- you just saved me a trip to the roof.

Are there other satellites you would recommend I consider?

Well it depends on what you are looking for

IA5 (97W…formerly Telstar 5) has a fair amount of ethnic and religious channels
IA6 (93W) has news feeds on it
AMC3 (87W) has PBS
AMC5 (79W) has some education stuff and horse racing

You sure you can’t get G10? That has a lot of English channels on them

No, I cannot even get 119 which has an elevation of 21 degrees where as the Galaxy has an elevation of 18 degrees. Azimuth differences are only a few degrees.

I fed the trees some nurishment but so far, time is on their side.

Just looked at 93W on Lyngsat. It has feeds including FOX! That would be fine IF NEWS FEEDS ARE RECEIVABLE. Damned! I intend to get my SG2100 up there soon.

Yes there are some fox feeds on 93. Most of these are just news feeds

If you are looking for Fox, AMC4 (101W) has Fox from Beaumont, TX

Well, I have a couple to try. When I mentioned Fox, what I was hoping for was Fox News-- CNN seems completely out of reach.

If I get a chance I will try installing an LNB and repointing the dish this afternoon. Most likely, I will not be able to get to it until the morning.

I will post how I make out--

Thanks for your help Iceberg!!!!

Treelover--don't you believe it

Treelover,

As a Fox news fan, I can tell you it is not FTA! :(

However, as Iceberg said there are lots of feeds from them on IA6. As a last resort, you can see them on the "six-in-one" channel on Dish Network (ITC) although it's pretty small unless you have a big screen. :)

Here is where I now am. Put together my SG2100 along with an old DVT 36" eleptical dish with a linear LNB. CS4000-- selected AMC 5 in Dish Settings along with LNB power on, single LNB, LNB frequency to 10.750, 22Khz- off, all switches - off. Also set motorized settings--- USAL.

The SG2100 was set to 180 degrees, connected to the CS4000 and the motor turned a slight amount to CS4000 internal presets.

Now my task was to mount the entire assembly onto my roof mount, aim the dish to AMC 5's location which is about 206 degrees from my location. Elevation should be in the ball park with earlier settings.

Dish mounted so I am able to rotate it for fine tuning, and I connected my Digisat alignment meter-- BYPASSING THE SG2100. swung the dish and sure enough, signals, in fact many signals. I focused on the one closed to 205 degrees. Removed the meter and connected the LNB directly to the receiver.

Climbed down the roof, down the ladder, into the house, up the stairs to the TV. Yup!!! SIGNAL but all RED. I did this several times same results on AMC 5. I tried selecting other satellites on the CS4000 to try learning WHICH satellite I had. Tried all the sat's the CS4000 is preloaded with and all I got was RED.

Anybody have hints on what I am doing incorrectly? Is there a way to identify the satellite without breaking my budget?

Thanks in advance---

I am sure someone more knowledgeable will be along real soon, but in the meantime here is what I have picked up:

When setting up your system - Bypass the motor until you have a bird or 2 in, and Blind Scan. When you peak the dish to your meter, go inside and do a blind scan to see where you are at. THen you can make adjustments from there. Good luck! I am sure someone will be along that can help you :)

Thanks Larry-- I do have the SG2100 bypassed. Just set the receinver to "factory reset", still the same.

Have you tried a TP. scan on the signal you have found? (Or blind scan if you have it)

Try another satellite as if its not AMC-5 it may be one close by!
You may have found Nimiq2 right next door @ 82ºw

A little flustrated with myself but this is where I am.

I still cannot get anything but red on my CS4000, I set it to factory, no changes. Some of the wild thoughts in my mind include spending $425 big ones and buy a Birdog. The only thing stopp the order is the swallow-- I choke when spending money for things I don't really need. But then again, a Birdog WILL tell me the which satellite I am locked onto.

The next thing--- I question the LNB. But as I type this out, words from a teacher loooong ago haunt me "a good worker never blames his tools!" Weeell, an LNB really isn't a tool.

Going down the LNB path for a little bit here, is there a reason to favor a universal over a linear??? ALSO, AND THIS IS IMPORTANT-- WITH A UNIVERSAL, CAN I INSERT A SATELLITE FINDER?? Read someplace that a satellite finder won't work with a universal. Could it be that a universal uses 22KHz and not 13/18VDC?? If so, suppose the meter has a built in power supply-- ie. batteries?

I understand that foreign (Europe) uses lower frequencies not found usable with a linear.

Just rambling on here waiting for Wifey to come home and ask-- "WELL, WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING ALL DAY???" AHHhhhh--- life is so sweet!

Tree

EDIT: I thought I owned a universal, I don't but I certainly can purchase one

A Satellite meter can be used with a Universal LNBF, but you would have to change the L.O. to Single 10600 Because of the 22Khz switch in the Universal LNBF
