Hate to bring about another one of these threads but jeez the installer I got yesterday totally screwed everything up.
He was a nice guy but he did a pretty piss poor install and I didn't catch it until after he had left. I'll try and be brief but cover it all.
8-11 AM (I think) was my window and he shows up at 9:30. I took the AM appointment because I've never had a Sat guy show up early, always late and figured the further back I am the more likely I am to wait or get canceled so wanted to be first for the day.
Comes in, sets up dish outside runs some wires to my network run. Brings in the boxes with the equipment. I notice the HD DVR is in a different box and ask him if its a refurb and he tells me no. Open the box and look on the back of the unit and see the refurb sticker there so Iask him about it and he told me to call Direc TV. I did and Told them I didn't pay for a refurb and to get me a new one so they talk to the tech and he agrees to go back to the shop and get me a new one. Last and only new one left. Fine.
He gets up in my roof / attic area to drop another line for the extra tuner in the master bedroom (only had 1 there). Drops it and proceeds to knock out 4 holes in my wall trying to fish the wire. I didn't notice the holes until after he left because he took down a mirror to fish the wires and put the mirror back up so it covered the holes. Sneaky ass hole.
Regardless the Master bedroom DVR is all set and running with both tuners so I watch that and play with it while he goes and gets the new HD Dvr for the living room.
He comes back, I shut down everything in the bedroom as its working. He sets up the HR20 100 (New one) and its totally DOA. No power running to it at all. Try a different outlet even the power cord from another unit and no dice. Totally dead. They don't have any other new units so I call D* and explain what happened. They can only get me a refurb through tech support so they send me to install and they couldn't guarantee me a new unit either. So I knew I was pretty much stuck with the refurb, not happy but not the end of the world. Better than waiting another week or two for them to get someone else out there so I asked the person to add the Protection plan to my account free for one year for my troubles and they agreed.
Ok, so we hook up and activate the refurb HR 700. No 103 or 99 sat. Run the software update and reboots. Still not there. He goes in back and swaps out a crappy looking silver switch for a larger KA / KU capable switch and wallah we have signal. I check really quick for decent signal and I'm 95+ on 101, 95+ on 119 and 110 and 78-85 on 103B. Good enough.
Tech leaves, we go out for dinner.
Come back home and clean up the mess he made from fishing the wire (dust and debris on the floor) and notice the holes in the wall. I'm pretty pissed.
Go to the living room tv to watch the Sox get their rear ends kicked. Working fine. Its recording and I wanted to switch channels to see something else for a bit and I get this error about needing to select which tuner to switch to. I notice there is only one tuner listed and I slap my forehead because I already know something is wrong.
I check the singal strength and I only have signal on 1 tuner, not the other. I get up and head back to look at the switch and I'm astonished at what I see.
Essentially he ran 2 wires from the Dish LNB's
Connected them directly to 2 wires in my house setup (one for living room the other master bedroom)
The switch has two wires (presumably the non functioning tuner in each room) in the output section of the switch.
There are no wires going into the input section of the switch.
I scratch my head a bit and call D*. Explain the situation and they pretty much said the guy didn't run it right, I should have 4 wires from the dish to the inputs and thats why only half my stuff is working. She couldn't believe he set it up like that so they are sending someone out on Sunday to fix it, requested a high level tech and not the same person that came out.
Hopefully they can get it fixed. In the mean time I have my stations on a single tuner in each room so its not so bad but kind of sucks that they are sending people out to do installs that have no clue. Sad thing is this guy claimed to be a lead tech, told me he made $24/hr and that he had been doing it for 9 years. I'm pretty sure he was just a huge blow hard after seeing the sh!tty job he did.
Figured I'd share and before your tech leaves make sure you check everything on all your TV's one last time. Won't let that happen again.
