Hopper OTA USB problems

Fewer channels

I am getting fewer channels that I did with the 622 tuner. It is the same antenna in the same location. Any thoughts?

I don't know if this is related but, my EHD has always worked well with the exception of the icon issue. The other day I had to disconnect and reconnect the EHD's USB connection to get it recognized, two consecutive days, the 3rd day it was recognized, 230 here for a while.

I haven't had any more black screens on my ota channels since I eliminated the one timer that was created before the S230 software update. I use my ota tuner for mostly news programs : GMA , Noon news, Evening local news, Meet the Press & This Week. I will use it more once they download software for manual timers and I can record shows on Metv again. If the black screen is happening when there is a timer involved , I suggest eliminating the timers and re-creating them. Also how are you tuning to the ota channels? Are you using the red button on the remote to see which tuners are available or is it from the guide itself or is it just timer related?

I deleted all of my older timers and created them again just now. You might be on to something there. Dish's software might not work this way, but it is possible that the recording was set to run a script with old code that doesn't reference the OTA tuner (even though the recording would never use that one anyway). In the worst case, it could cause the OTA tuner to be shut off. Or I might just get the black screen problem back at some random time again. I am not too concerned about it. It is an annoyance to me and I'm sure it will be fixed. I am just happy to have OTA available at this point.

Are you missing analog channels? the OTA on Hopper works for digital channels only

What are the reasons DISH would suggest, for proper operation, that the tuner should remain flat? I just don't buy it and think it's akin to superstition. I'd put credence behind it if they thought the heat dissipation through convection was enhanced by certain positioning. Do they think some EMI/RFI is reduced by orientation? Should they have built the case from metal to give it a Faraday cage affect? I'd like to hear a sound reason for orientation.

I don't get it but I saw the little pc of paper that said so. My stand is not real deep, but I was able to lay it down flat behind the hopper because its not very deep either.

Maybe the issue with the SB Tuner being flat is to not having it hang by the cable on the USB Port which could cause contact problems.

When I used to OTA tuner that was built into the VIP622 and I was able to get 8 main channels and 8-10 subchannels. I don't know if the OTA for the 622 worked for digital only or digital and analog? I thought they were all digital now.

622 is/was digital-only.

I can see the worry for strain damage on the connectors, but the thing doesn't weight that much. I could see adding more strain to the connectors by forcing it to be flat.

I think the strain is not coming from the tuner itself, but rather from the stiff coax that you connect to it.

Yea, mechanical strain. What other strain is there? Good ol' Newton, equal and opposite stuff. Whatever force the tuner sees, the cabling sees too. If you're worried about stiff cables, either eliminate the cables or let the system seek it's neutral positioning.

Didn't read all the posts but my problem after installing the ota module is both Joeys only have VOD1 in the guide, nothing else. So far no luck with tech support. They are supposed to call back tomorrow.

Today I went to an OTA channel it said could not get signal or signal lost.
All OTA were then all black
I went to setup and it said the normal 90% signal
I rebooted and it fixed.
2nd hopper had no issues. It has no Joeys
Bad hopper has one Joey and a sling adapter.
We need DIRT to open or update the ticket on this issue as it seems to be spreading.

I still have the OTA black screen issue after a hard reboot. The OTA channels are fine for a few hours but then start showing a black screen. I've not lost the signal as far as I can tell.

I was going to order a Hopper and Joey now that OTA reception is available, but it sounds like the OTA receiver is not ready to provide reliable service. Recordings with nothing but a blank screen are not something I want to mess with. I'm going to stay with my ViP722 a while longer until they figure out the cause of the blank screens.
