Here are some pictures.View attachment 114038

This is on an LG 65EF9500 4K OLED
What channel and show was this image taken from?

This whole issue boggles the mind and common sense.

My thinking is that everything in the Dish system, i.e. LNB, coax, hub, and inputs to Hopper and Joey has to be good. It's a digital satellite signal and a digital MOCA network connecting everything. That all seems to be in place. If it were faulting, you'd see many other issues associated with corrupt data streams, not just poor video quality.

This leaves something suspect in the video stream delivery, from HDCP compatability to a prossessing issue.

What's the effect of a low bandwidth HDMI connection?

Would a ground loop introduce anything to consider?

Even component cables looked the same. It was Fox but all my channels look terrible.

Then thats great all they need to do is bring a Hopper with sling out and hook it up to try it. Easy enough.
Yup as if they swap everything out it's only more work for them.

Again its not the LNB or even the cabling. Its digital, meaning it decodes or doesn't decode. The LNB and cable dont change anything and if the signal was too low you wouldn't get a picture at all. Because its digital you gets whats there as it is there the LNB and cable do not change that. Its not like the old analog days where if you had a weak signal then you would get snow or ghosting. Digital is digital.

Again I believe this could be a power issue to the Hopper which is causing its output to be sending out crap. Which is why it looks bad on the other TV's too. The power issue could be not enough power or too much. I don't think its the Hopper 3 itself as they changed it out... which again because you are getting signal from the LNB and the Hopper 3 is able to decide it and because its sending out a crappy picture to each TV tells me its more than likely a power issue.

I wish you lived by I would bring over a power conditioner to test it out. :)

Are you subscribed to "HD for life"? If the system thinks you aren't, maybe HD isn't being enabled to begin with. Just throwing out any remote possibilities...

So are we saying my whole house has a power issue or the Hopper 3 is just more sensitive to it because we did move the Hopper 3 to another TV and power outlet with no improvement.

He wouldn't be able to tune to the HD channels if that were the case.

Would be interesting to see a screenshot of his guide and television settings though from the H3.

Yes been with Dish over 15 years. HD for life ever since HD was available lol.

What kills me is the 4k on demand played right off my hard drive look great. That should take everything in the house off the table as an issue because those are downloaded from internet to the hard drive.

Ive had my H3 for over a week now with the LG OLED, and I can say this for a fact:

  • OTA and some sat channels look great, a few other channels/programs look like crap (was the same with H2)
  • Since I found a way around the H3 triggering HDR, all is well. With HDR triggered, the whole screen is blown out and looks horrible. The reason for this is HDR content is graded darker than SDR, so SDR in HDR mode is going to look bad, period.

Other than that, I have nothing to report.

In the world of electricity anything is possible. :)

I have seen some strange ones in my 20 years doing this. :)

If you live in a city I would go to Best Buy or Staples, buy a Medium Size UPS, go home plug it in and charge it for a day without plugging anything into it. Then after its fully charged plug the H3 (and only the H3) into the UPS and unplug the UPS from the wall and let it power the H3 only by its internal battery and see if that works. If yes theres your problem. If not well then crap. Once done with the test return the UPS to where you purchased it from. If it is an electrical problem call an electrician and see what they find. Could be something as simple as your ground is not properly connected.

Hopper 3 is set to 4k, 1080p, 1080i not really many other options. I have tried all the picture settings and they all look equally terrible.
My TV is using the same calibrated picture it was using with the Hopper 2.

I have a APC UPS on my PC that I could use. I will let you know after I test it.

Remember when you do it to have the UPS unplugged from the wall. Let it run off the battery.

I really hope thats it. I know about how many H3's are out there in the field and other then the HDR issue some others are having you are the only one having this extreme issue and since everything has been replaced and its still doing it has me looking to outside causes. :)

Good luck. :D

What is your work around for the HDR trigger?

What is your work around for the HDR trigger?

Two scenarios:

1) You can reboot the H3 from the menu, and as soon as you tell it to reboot, unplug the HDMI cable from the H3 or display. The HDR trigger happens on the boot up during one of the splash screens. Plug back in after 7-8 mins after you know the entire reboot is done and it is on live tv.
2) Since I figured out how to defeat, when I go to bed every night I unplug the HDMI cable from the H3, so when it goes thru the nightly reboot nothing happens. When i get home from work the next day, I plug the HDMI in, turn everything on, and boom, no HDR trigger. If the H3 is connected to the LG during boot, it will trigger HDR even if the display is off.

HDR being on or off isn't going to cause my lower resolution image issue. It may look darker or muddy.

Funny my Amazon video and UBD-K8500 only trigger HDR when the movie or show supports it yet the Hopper 3 wants it on all the time.

Smart pack vs flex pack

OTA Adapter and original hopper with new interface.
