I'm trying to figure out how to get all the channels that are possible to receive with fta. I would prefer to stick with the ku band. The c band seems to require a much larger dish. So, what do I need to get the most of the most american channels. I only know english. Also, if anyone has a dish preference and lnb preference, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

C-band (correct me if i'm wrong) tends to have more available channels in English. (sub and non-sub)

Although if you decide to settle on Ku, there are loads of surprise activity. (backhauls, unexpected feeds, FTE's) FTE means "fail to encrypt".

Sometimes they will FTEAF (Fail to encrypt and forget)

Lots to see out there.

You get the most channels you can by having the biggest and best dish you can afford, a blindscan receiver, and a careful eye for announcements of new channels. I don't know where you are, but I'd say get at least a 39" dish to take full advantage of what's out there.

library search

What I would suggest is that you read over the following material.
Then, do some shopping on your own.
Ask questions if you have them.
Then, present a shopping list here of the things you are interested in.
And , get some feedback from everybody, before you spend a cent.

Here is a good reading list of some threads to get you going:

Reviews of dishes and LNBs, and what sizes/models are better.

Pretty good dish deal.

Good deal on LNB.

Receiver deals.
Also keep an open eye for: Coolsat 5000 or 6000, Pansat 3500sd, Fortec Mercury II.
Can't go wrong with those.
But, if you have special needs or interests, such as recording capability or hi def, tell us.

i am using a primestar for my fta ku. i always get weird feeds popping up! yesterday i got a feed called cowboy 1,2,and 3, a dallas tx newstruck feed. alot are scrambled, but alot are free too! c band is not as good as ku as far as feeds go, but there are still some great channels out there on c band, try c band analog too for some great feeds, especially t6!

From my limited experience - what you need to do is:

1. Cut down every tree in sight!
2. Spend every waking moment trying to figure this stuff out. Make it your WHOLE goal in life. Forget everything else - that stuff doesn't matter.
3. Once you figure all this stuff out, spend every waking moment watching tv and scanning for even more channels!
4. Cut down some more trees that may be blocking that one particular sat you are after! I have a neighbours' tree blocking Galaxy10r and everything west of it. Anyone know how to poison trees?!
I used to like trees. I think I will go live on a prairie now.

I'll one-up that; I live in Utah, right in the valley. Everytime I think about the Ultimate LOS (line of sight), my gaze turns up to the mountains next to me. Ah, to have a 12' BUD on the peak of even a smaller one! That would get me the entire arc, maybe even those -.01 satellites ;)

. . . and you could wi-fi it down to the whole valley !

Of course, they'd all have to watch your choice, but maybe that's better than what they got now (?)
