Hello Guys Need Some help getting started

I recently purchased a Captiveworks Cw-800s with a Winegard 31"(76cm) dish.
and a DMS International .3dB KU LNBF. I have set the stuff up and am trying to get to Galaxy 18 123W. I have aligned the dish and can get a signal strength
reading of around 90 but I can't get any quality at all (00) I have tried adjusting the dish all over but can't get any further. I'm stuck.

The manual that came with the receiver doesn't help.

Any help would be much appreciated.

HI, first I just want it to be known that I am also a newbie so others may also want to chime in. When I was searching for 123 I spent 4 or 5 nights trying to tune it in. What I finally ended up doing was pointing the dish at 119, yes you will get a signal on 119 with a linear lnb. You reciver should say something like "119 locked". Once I fine tuned it in from there I moved the dish slightly to the right when standing behind the dish. Then I did a blind scan. Remember 123 is only 2 degrees off from 119 and 119 is a very strong sat. When I did my blind scan I also did not have no quality. I was able to scan in a bunch of channels but only a few worked, others had no quality and no signal. I then put the info page up so that I could see the quality meter on the channel that I wanted to fine tune and proceeded to move the dish slightly until I got it. For me this worked. I hope this helps you. Also remember that 123 is a bugger to hit. There is a recent thread about the low signal strengths. Another tip that I can give is when you dont see channels that you know are there when you do a blind scan, RE-SCAN. This has worked for me in dealing with the crappy viewsat that I have.

Sounds like I picked the wrong Sat to start out with. Can someone suggest a better one to start out with ? I am just trying to get something to look at.

Check your LNB settings in the receivers setup menu?
LNB Type: Standard or Single not Universal
LNB Freq or L.O.: 10750

G25 at 97 is pretty interesting, and I also like 101.0 which ever one that is.

Success !! I was beginning to think I was never going to get there.

Thanks for the replies. I made the switch to LNB Freq 10750 and aimed at 101 W and got a number of channels. Is there some recommended reading where I can learn how to use these various settings like LNB FREQ and transponder etc ? Or is the forum the best learning tool ?

I am working on transfering the information from wxw.lyngsat.com into a channel list, but it is a long and tedious task and I am running into problems with the actual set up of the channels. I may have something to share a little later in the week to make it easier to "see" what is there. Because as I said earlier the more scanning I do the more problems I am finding. I thought for a while that my dish was just off and that why I could not pick up some stuff I knew was there but then when I manually entered in the info from lyngsat it came up. Thats when I came to the conclusion that a viewsat is junk. I even loaded the newest satinfo file and pgm file from the site and that made it a little better but the sat info is missing alot of tp's and that equals missing alot of channels. I'll keep you posted, or if your going to stay put on one sat I ad in the information on that one first and send it to you if you like.

Oh and congrats on pulling in some channels, welcome to the hobby. You will never watch tv again because you will be too busy trying to find it!

That may be how TheList came into being.
And it's more accurate than Lyngsat, and hosted right here on the forum server.
The author of TheList is currently beta testing new features, so keep an eye on it for improvements.

For the rank beginner, this page at FTAlist is a good starting point which isn't too overwhelming.

Global-CM updates his list pretty often, too.

After doing more reading, I have another question. The LNB that I have says 'Dual DSS Circular LNB' . I understand the word circular to mean the polarization of the signal. So, if I want to get stuff from linear satellites, do I need to get a different LNB ? It appears that I still get signal from linear but it is much weaker. Am I on track here ?? If so, can I mount both on
my dish and input to my receiver ?

Yeap, I did mean 4 degrees, somehow I forgot to mention 121 along the way!
Now about the list,
I will branch this off to another thread where it can be properly discussed and not take away from the help that tmalone42 needs.

About the circular LNB's, there are only a few channels that it can pick up. To me its not worth it. I have a dual linear/circular and the shipping mistke that made it possible for me to have it was a waste of money. But thats just my take as I know many people like NASA.
