Since my last post, everyone has been so helpful, I had one more question for the people here.

Since the NFL is being displayed in 720p, do i need to change my 811 setting to 720 display or can i keep it at 1080. I currently leave it at 1080, and it looks great. Just wondering if it'll look better at 720 or if it changes automatically. I have a samsung 50" DLP TV. Thanks.

Depending on your TV, it might be worth giving it a shot. Some DLP's are 720p native, although the conversion is quite good to 1080i. Another thing to consider - does your TV accept 720p? (some don't). If it does, I would at least try 720p for ESPN/ABC/Fox, and see what your TV scaler does (if it even comes into play). *Usually* the path of least resistance is best, so 720p broadcast --> 720p 811 --> 720p TV is probably best.

I'll try that

Thanks, I've got to try that one later in the week.

Also, do you think that's the reason why sometimes lets say im watching WGN-DT(1&2) and sometimes the sidebars are there and other times its 16x9...sometimes it acts strange sometimes, coming in and out, not just commercials, but the actual game?

Sonic, I also have a 50" Samsung DLP. I have tried both 720P and 1080i when watching football on ESPN-HD. I really can't see much of a difference so I just leave mine on 1080i and let the tv do the conversion. These sets have an excellent faroudja based decoder so I'm not really surprised by the minimal difference.

I have a Samsung HLP 4663 DLP with the 811. Knowing that the set is 720p native I had set the 811 at 720p output originally but since then I switched it to 1080i and I think that is actually looking a lot better.

Though I did this when watching the US open on CBS, and the CBS transmission is 1080i, so that might have something to do with it also ....

I watch Fox HD football last Sunday and I found that having the 811 output to 720p and letting my Pioneer 630hd Elite do the upconversion to 1080i produced a noticably sharper picture the having the 811 do the upconversion.

BTW, FOX really nailed the 5.1DD on Sunday with their football games. I could hear the stadium announcer on my back speakers and I could also hear crowd noises from everywhere. Sounded like I was sitting in the stadium. However, my wife said it was tooo realistic and went to her room and closed the door. So much for exciting the wife on the games.

If you have a 720p native set (Samsung DLP, Pan. RP-LCD, etc.) and you set the 811 to 1080i for ESPN, ABC, and FOX, you are taking a 720p signal, converting it to 1080i, and then passing it to the tv to be converted back to 720p. You may not notice the effects easily, but you are losing quality. Best to set 720p as the output for those channels. It's actually very easy to set up a macro on a programmable remote to switch resolutions.

My TV does not display 720p, only 1080i, so if something is broadcast in 720p like NFL Football on FOX) should I have my 811 set to 1080i or 720p? Which will usually look better?

Also, what resolution are Discovery HD, ESPN< HBO, CBS, NBC, ABC, and WGN broadcast in?

If your TV won't display 720P, set your 811 to output 1080I or you won't get a picture at all. ESPN-HD and ABC broadcast in 720P, as does Fox. The rest are 1080I. It's all a moot point for you let the 811 convert the 720P feeds to 1080I and all is well.

I say it does not depend on wheather your HD set receives 720p natively or 1080i natively. I believe that if your set can convert 720p broadcasts to 1080i than it is very possible that setting the 811 to output 720p and letting your set upconvert the picture to 1080i will produce a better picture than having the 811 upconvert the 1080i.

I believe that this would happen because your HD set should have a better line doubler for upconversion than the 811. This might not be true for all 1080i sets but it is true for Pioneer Elites.

Of course if your HD set is 720p natively you should set and leave the 811 at 720p. However, if you have a 1080i native chassy then you should experiment and see if setting the 811 to 720p produces a better picture than setting the 811 to 1080i.

Remember, if you do find as I have that the 811's 720p output produces the better picture for 720p HD (ABC, FOX, ESPN-HD) please remember to change the 811 back to 1080i for those HD broacasts in 1080i (CBS, NBC,TNT-HD, HDNET, HDMOVIES, DISCOVERY-HD, WB & UPN). A 1080i broadcast will definetely look better with the 811 in 1080i for a HD 1080i chassy.

thats the way wgn is.. it depends if there braudcastin in hd at the time.. like if your watching cubs... when it goes to comercial.. it will show the side bars cauz its not an hd commercial. its 480p... when they go back to the game its 16 by 9 cauz the format is in 1080 I... and of course not all programming is in hd from wgn... but i am happy that the 9.1 to 19.1 @ 2 bug has been fixed.. and i now see it a 9.1 @ 9.2 instead of 19. and the cuting out part is on wgn from switching formats... i get it too.. its not your 811
