HDMI 1.4 Specification to Support 3D

The HDMI Consortium, the group behind high-definition multimedia interface or HDMI has announced on Wednesday its plans to add 3D support to the the latest HDMI 1.4 specification. The group has also said they will meet in late January to discuss the addition of 3D support.
“3D is a nascent market and thus continues to evolve quickly. The addition of the new format will secure the application of 3D for broadcasting, in addition to the existing applications for Blu-ray and gaming,” said Steve Venuti, president of HDMI Licensing in a statement.
Once the group makes the new HDMI 1.4 format official, it will be mandatory for all manufacturers to incorporate 3D supporting HDMI ports to all devices such as TV themselves, top-boxes, and video game consoles.
Currently, none or hardly any devices have 3D supported HDMI ports. It is expected that various original manufacturers will showcase 3D devices equipped with HDMI 1.4 at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show [CES] in January.

HDMI supports 3D now but it only sends every other pixel so when left and right eye channels are combined, the total bandwidth is the same. The new standard allows full resolution for both eyes. Some Samsung TVs have been 3D capable since 2007.

Another part of HDMI 1.4 that many are missing is 4K support. Currently Digital cinema is primarily 4K (4000x2000) 4 times the detail of 1080P. On a screen small enough to fit in your home that much detail would be stunning.:D
