If this has been discussed here in the past, I apologize, I am new. I have an HR-20 and the guy who installed it was able to get the same signal playing on my kitchen and bedroom TV. He used my VCR as the out line and it worked perfectly. It recently stopped working for some reason and I called D*, since I have been paying a maintenance fee. At first the guy said that it could not be done and acted like I had imagined have the feed to my kitchen for that last six months. He finally called in and they told him it is not supposed to be done because it is not good for the equipment. When the original guy did it he called in to his boss and he said if the service guy is willing to do it pay him privately because D* will not cover this work. So now I am sitting here with only TV working and D* refusing to troubleshoot why that happened. Any suggestions? No flames please. I am a woman living alone and I pretty adept at computers and even a little with D* but I can't figure this one out.

Yep, this sounds like it was "rigged" and is not the correct way it should have been done and I am surprised it worked at all, let alone 6 mos. You need to run dedicated lines from the dish to each viewing location; up to 4 tuners without and added multi-switch; which is needed at the 5th tuner and up. If you pay for the protection plan (or whatever it is) I would think they would cover a shoddy/rigged up install job; but I am not sure.

WELCOME and good luck with it.

Why would it stop working? I originally had three boxes so the wiring was all there. It looks as if he just ran one cable out of the vcr and hooked it up to the multi switch and it worked on all the TV's but I don't know how to troubleshoot it.

D* said you can't do it with HD but you can with a normal DVR so I had decided to get the DRV (not HD) and let them run that to the other rooms. That was 99.99 plus shipping but now they charge $99 installantion charge. They never had that fee in the past. I was so pissed off after that charge that I just cancelled the order. They said the installation charge started as of 1/08 but there is nothing on their website that mentions that.

BTW I had a multi-switch because I had three boxes one of them a Tivo so I needed five connections.

My husband used to run these wires and jump the signal to another TV but now I am alone and I never paid attention how he did it.

He had the composite video & audio connections from the back of the HR20 into the AUX (or Line) In jacks of the VCR. The VCR has to be set for AUX (or Line) In, in order or the VCR to "see" the HR20.

VCR outputs to channel 3 (or 4), and is run into a splitter, then sent to remote locations.

That is how it works, most likely reason as to why it quit is that the input channel of VCR was changed from AUX (or Line) to something else.

Sounds like that could be it, go through the outputs and inputs on the VCR and try to find the right combination.

We have frequent, momentary, blackouts in this area, just long enough to lose the settings on the vcr and clocks and other things. I learned early on how to set the vcr to Line 1 and get the signal back. I know when the setup is not correct because when my TV output is on "video rear" I don't even get the signal on the TV with the box so that is not the problem.

After a blackout I would lose the signal on the other TV's so on the back of each remote I wrote down the settings that got that TV back on line. I did all the troubleshooting I could think of and it is probably a loose connection somewhere and I have no idea about that.

I have heard from D* after calling Retention and they are really bending over backwards to keep me as a customer. I told them I wanted to close my account because I did not think it was fair that I had to pay a $99.00 installation charge for the non-HD DVR. I had cancelled HDaccess because I told them it was crappy.

They are giving me both the receiver and the installation free. I will only pay the $19.95 shipping and they are also giving me HDaccess free for a year. I figure all of this is worth over $300.00 so this forum is right in suggesting that you get to the people at retention.

Getting the second dvr hooked up to my other TV's, which are not HD, is probably a better idea than that jerry-rigged system which may, in fact, be interfering with my HD signal.

So we can close this case now but I want to thank you guys for your help.
Regards, Joan

Man you cant help but take jabs at techs sheeeeeesh!!! Like in another post the VCR input prob got changed and if changed back then it will work again!! And she doesnt want but only ONE reciever mirrored to other tvs not other recievers ya tool

Listen up.
#1, I was happy the guy did it but if there is no out line on the DVR there must be a reason.
#2, D* installer and his supervisor said it was a rigged job and it would affect the output of the HDDVR
#3, When I don't have enough knowledge to make an intelligent decision I usally go along with the experts.
#4, D* made a very generous offer to solve the problem for me and I would be stupid not to accept given that every time I have a problem in the future they are going to blame it on the out to VCR.
