HD Upgrade Deals for Long Time Subscriber?

A non-technical minded friend of mine has asked me to help him join the HD world. He has charged me with finding him a HDTV set that will be a good fit for him. Anyway, I explained to him that in order to get the most out of upgrading to HD, that he will need to ditch his 322 receiver and get an upgrade to HD from Dish. He does not want a DVR, so I explained that he needed to ask them for a 222K, or Duo HD receiver, what ever they call it. He has been a subscriber for about 8 or 10 years with them, and he told me that he called them about it and that in order to get the free HD for life, that he will need to pay a $99 fee up front. I have not been with Dish in some time, and I have kind of fell out of the know when it comes to their current offers. Is this the best offer that a long time subscriber can expect to get an upgrade such as this? Should he ask for some type of programming credit, etc..? I was just trying to help him get the best deal from them. All of your input will be appreciated. Thanks

To get the free HD other than the $99 fee he can be on auto pay and paperless billing. Then there is no "$99 fee" for free hd

It sounds like they have 2 TVs but if not they could go with a 211 too. Those are the standard non-DVR HD receivers.

Once you have an HDDVR you will never go back,with a HDDVR you are in total control of what you are watching.I like that a HDDVR has a 9 day guide,where a basic HD receiver only has a 2 day guide.If you go with a VIP211k you can pay a fee later$40. and convert the VIP211k to a HDDVR by adding a EHD,a 211k has one satellite tuner and one OTA tuner respectively.There are alot of options with DISH when it comes to getting a HDDVR,it depends what you want to use,with a standard HD receiver there are less options.The choice is yours,Good Luck!

Once you have an HDDVR you will never go back,with a HDDVR you are in total control of what you are watching.I like that a HDDVR has a 9 day guide,where a basic HD receiver only has a 2 day guide.If you go with a VIP211k you can pay a fee later$40. and convert the VIP211k to a HDDVR by adding a EHD,a 211k has one satellite tuner and one OTA tuner respectively.There are alot of options with DISH when it comes to getting a HDDVR,it depends what you want to use,with a standard HD receiver there are less options.The choice is yours,Good Luck!

Yes, I completely agree about a DVR. I tried to talk him into getting one, but he says it will be too confusing for him to operate. I have had them since the first DirecTivo's back in 2000-01 and I can't stand to watch TV without being able to pause or record.
