It's going to be very obvious that I do not know much about what I am talking about--I have purchased an Epson projector that, perhaps, is HD compatable (Last year, the Directv guy putting up the dish said it was capable of projecting in HD-he tried to convince me to get Directv HD then). I currently have Directv with the D10 receiver. I also have an antenna on top of my house that was there when I moved in. Can I run a cable from the antenna to the D10 receiver and receive the HD signals from my Local Stations? Or, do I HAVE to get the Directv HD Receiver? Is their an easier/cheaper way to recieve these channels without the cost of a Directv HD Receiver upgrade--say, a one time cost of another brand of HD Tuner just for locals? Is there such thing as an HD Tuner for local HD Broadcasts? I live within 5 miles of several of the stations broadcasting in HD and at least one local channel isn't offered with the Directv Locals. Sorry, I'm so behind on the times here. Thanks for anything...

First off; WELCOME to SatGuys!

What is the model number of that Epson projector (FPTV)?

No, the DirecTV D10 is not HD ready; not for DBS HD or ATSC (OTA) HD.

You can look to purchase a stand-alone ATSC (OTA) tuner and a good antenna rated for and aimed correctly for your exact location. I can't say with 100% certainty if it will be any cheaper or easier than getting the DirecTV HD receiver which will do BOTH the DBS and OTA delivered digital signal (this is my method). See what prices you can find on the OTA model and then call DirecTV to compare; you will still need the antenna either way.

Thanks for your welcome and all of your help. You guys are the quickest answers I've found yet.

The Projector is an Epson Powerlite S1+, I recently found this website, http://www.dvhardware.net/review/6986 , it says that it is compatable with HD and has lots of numbers like 720p and 1080i that it is compatable with as well...but I can figure out what those mean later.

Do you have a specific brand of HD Tuner that you would recommend as a start to my search? Before Sunday, I didn't even know that HD Tuners existed.

A little off topic...Are you pleased with the Directv HD package or would you just go with the HD Tuner to get what HD I can OTA?

See here as well: http://www.projectorcentral.com/Epson-PowerLite_S1+.htm

I also have a FPTV (Sanyo PLV-Z series) use both (the DirecTV with OTA) and I am very happy with the results. I would not be able to go with just OTA digital, as there would be minimal sports HD, and I prefer having all I can get.

Are you wanting something brand new or used? What is your budget? If you are already a DBS consumer I will still recommend upgrading that receiver as the best overall route. IMHO.

Again, thanks for your suggestions...I finally upgraded my Directv. They are showing up on Saturday to put up a new 5 lnb satellite and I'm getting a new HD receiver box. I figure it will be worth the money just getting the extra channels.

Here is the interesting part...the Directv person on the phone said that I wouldn't even need to hook up the antenna to get my locals in HD, but on their website, when I type in my zip code for Huntington-Charleston, it said that local HD channels were not available, that I would have to use an antenna...so here I am again, not really knowing. But hey, one way or the other, I'll have those 8 HD channels for now.

Even IF you are in a MPEG4/DBS HD delivered DMA, I would ALWAYS still recommend connecting the OTA antenna. DBS will offer no more than 5 locals HD (the big 4 plus one in some areas) and the OTA will allow any other non-big4 digital plus and sub-channels you may want. So I would say just always keep/add the OTA if you can.

Always hook up an OTA.You will get Sub Channels.:eureka

Thank you guys for all your help. Well, after an emergency from the Directv guy cancelling on Saturday, I finally have a Directv HD receiver today. It's getting dark before I can plug in my antenna, I'll post how well it goes.

As a sidenote, another roadblock, my projector apparently is HD compatible, just not HD ready. I am currently having to purchase a HD-15 VGA to RGB RCA Component Converter/Cable Adapter (to get the red, green, blue ends)....Epson Price $100. I found a cheap one on Ebay for $3.25, lets hope it works.
