HBO to go all HD

I hope that this means soon all premium movie channels will go full hd by next year and that DISH will add them as they come online.

me, too. then i can start unlocking all the premium multi-channels i currently lock-out since they are too crappy looking to watch. ( I know i wont actually be unlocking the sd versions, but rather allowing the map-downs.)

With a clean slate on the new Dish system, Dish could simply only carry the HBO-HD. They will have no need to duplicate programming any more. The VIP receivers can downconvert if needed to SD.

I sure hope Dish's plan is to only carry the HD version of every channel on the new system. In other words plan the space out so that as each channel goes HD they have to room to simply replace the SD version with the HD version.

I believe the Blu Ray group just announced that movies in their format are out-selling HD DVD movies by a 2:1 margin.

"Just?"

Blu-ray has been outselling HD DVD since last Xmas, and is outselling them about 2 to 1 YTD.

One advantage to SD is the file size. Originally quoted at 7:1 HD:SD. I found an HDNet movie last night recorded 1:55 (HD), had 0:52 on disk then, and freeing the movie I had 2:01. So I know the disk was not getting many bits but I didn't realize it has gone down this much. And yes, MPEG-4 takes like 1/2 of MPEG-2 space for the same recording time.
For HBO and SHO maybe, I should repoint my 61.5 to 148 to get the full resolution?
