Interesting. I didn't know it would work at all without a HDD. It should have nothing to do with pq however..

Is it possible that the HDD was running real hot effecting picture quality? With it removed maybe the 722k is running much cooler so the picture quality is better. Just wondering!

The video is written to the hard drive before being sent to the video outputs. If the drive was going bad it's possible it had an effect on the video but I would think it would be more in the way of pixelation if the data wasn't written correctly.

I disconnected the drive on my first 722 several years ago, so I could watch live TV while waiting for the replacement to arrive.
