The video is written to the hard drive before being sent to the video outputs. If the drive was going bad it's possible it had an effect on the video but I would think it would be more in the way of pixelation if the data wasn't written correctly.
I disconnected the drive on my first 722 several years ago, so I could watch live TV while waiting for the replacement to arrive.
