Got My Hopper w/Sling Replacement for 1st Gen Hopper Today (Observations)

I don't believe you will see one with more than three tuners

Why do you say that?

I think they should redo the Joey. The joey needs to have it's own tuner so it don't mooch off the hopper, and still stream recorded content. That way if your watching live tv, you don't need to borrow the hopper's tuner. Also, another neat function I have proposed, is a receiver-to-receiver messaging app. Let's say the kids are downstairs watching Tv on the joey. Mom in the living room can press a couple buttons, and have "Dinner is ready" appear on the TV.

And maybe you should start your own company and make all the decisions that you deem necessary. The system is fine just as it is...

I could not disagree more. They need to continue to make improvements and since Dish does access this site and see our feedback, why can't we voice our opinion? Can you honestly say you are 100% content if they made no further updates to the hopper?:)

I agree there always new ideas for improvements, but I am pretty sure Dish does access the site and read feedback

I do like the messaging idea. I also think 3 tuners is enough for 1 hopper and if you need more, 2 hoppers fits the bill nicely. Family of 5 here and we've never had a conflict with 2 hoppers since our install in November. Maybe we're not typical but that's my experience.

I don't mind adding a 2nd hopper later in the future when I start hitting tuner conflicts, but I do wish they would inter grate things a little better. I am a techie person, so I understand how to swap things and tuner management. My wife on the other had doesn't. She will realize we have 6 tuners, and not understand why you have to swap hoppers, since you can see the recordings on both hoppers, it should just work like one complete system, not half way.

Direct has an integrated playlist, and because it is a list, it works quite well and is easy to navigate. But even there it can sometimes be a big list to go through.

With Dish's current avoidance of all things in list form with the Hopper, an integrated playlist would be a nightmare to navigate through imo!

List view is where it's at! I stopped reading picture books when I was five. ;)

I'm not big on picture either... IT is part of my daily job. All my folder views are set to details on every workstation I am responsible for. I don't do icons... Although, for the mainstream, the pic's on Hopper are probably appreciated eye candy.

I don't know about that. A friend of mine who recently switched to Dish and is very non-technical didn't find those icons to be all that great either!

The tablet/smartphone tile mentality has permeated into everything. Have you tried to browse thru the selections on Hulu, Netflix, etc? Even the main Dish account page is cluttered with oversized tiles and sliders. Don't even get me started on Windows 8 or Server 2012.

There is a place for a touchscreen tile interface, and there is not.

I think I should try to explain myself a bit better, and, change my tone... :)

You think the Joey should have its own tuner. I don't agree. The Hopper/Joey system is designed to have the Joeys slave off of the Hopper. If you need more tuners you simply change one of those Joeys to a Hopper and you have more tuners. The monthly cost is exactly the same. The Joey itself is cheaper to make because of the fact that it has no tuner, hard drive, of moving parts. In the end that is cheaper for the subscriber. If you need a tuner in the bedroom, living room, and family room, that system already exists as VIP receivers. Will it cost you more, maybe, but its your choice. I don't see the need to reinvent the wheel for an existing technology, either way.

Now, as to the messaging idea. In this day and age, Junior probably has a cell phone with texting as does Mom. All Mom has to do is pick up her cell phone and text Junior in the basement that dinner is ready. If neither has that capability there is the old fashioned way. Mom walks to the basement door, opens it, and screams down the stairs "dinner's ready!" If Junior is , OMG, outside playing, she has to go to the outside door and scream it anyway. :)

I am not against upgrading the receivers at all. I just try to use a little common sense in what needs to be upgraded. There have already been several advancements in what the Hopper/Joey can do and some of them are exciting. Most of them work well while some need a little tinkering to get them work properly. Ideas are fine with some reservation. It should be thought out as to how many subscribers will actually use the innovation to make a credible decision to spend the money to implement it and keep the cost to the subscriber at a reasonable level. That's how business is supposed to work......

Totally agree with the above post... Speaking of improvement any noticeable changes with the 1st gen hopper software update? Also I was wondering the signal with the wifi adapter has IMO always been kinda iffy is the HWS improved? Speculation but I hear that new installs as of 2/6 will have to be the new hopper...

They do not have to be the new Hopper with Sling, the new orders will just default to the new Hopper instead of the old one. So if someone called Dish up as a new customer and asked to be installed with the Hopper, they would get the Hopper with sling. Now if someone was upgrading they would have to request a specific Hopper model.
