Google Navigation - Can you dim the screen ant night?

The question says it all. I find the screen on Google maps or navigation too bright in the truck on my Droid at night. I would like a quick way to dim the screen, but I haven't found a way to do that easily. Is this just another instance of me being a dumbass and not looking hard enough? Or is this a legitimate problem others have too?

it should auto dim

I was informed last night by my FIL that it does indeed dim at night when in navigation, but does not dim when simply viewing the map.
