hammondc...I honestly hope it works out for you and your situation, and can sympathize with wanting locals! I'm lucky enough to live in a spot where I get Charlotte locals OTA w/ a small indoor antenna.
For me the problem (at least the last one that finally did me in) was that they couldnt GET the digital channels or HD channels to work in my house. If they work when they install yours, then you will probably be OK. For me, they just plain didnt care that those channels didnt work...in a brand new home...and it one that THEY were the ones that had been contracted to wire the house to start with. Every different dept that came to the house (over a three week period) blamed it on one of like three other departments. In the end their top "technical" person came to the house and supposedly had it working. Gave me the direct number to his cell phone if it quit. 15 minutes after he left it quit. One week and about 7 unreturned calls/voicemails to his direct line later I took all the equip I had (save for cable modem) back to their office and told them to shove it. He never had the decency to return a single call.
Like you said, I'm still stuck paying for "basic" cable to have the priviledge to pay for cable internet. If I want DSL, I have to subscribe to their phone service, so I'm screwed either way. No other ISPs in this area are allowed access to any of thier lines (cable or DSL), so if you want it, it has to come from them. If I had the $$$ I would have already had wildblue installed to finally cut the cord with these people.
Anyways, folks...like I said...I'm not against cable technology in general...just these criminals!
