This was in the Facts Blasts sent to retailers ...

Free-to-Air (FTA) Receiver Piracy – EchoStar takes this issue very seriously and we are asking for your help in our ongoing efforts to actively combat FTA piracy.

o EchoStar Actions to Combat FTA Piracy:

- EchoStar recently filed suit in federal court to combat the design, manufacture, and distribution of FTA products (hardware and software) used to illegally receive DISH Network programming.

- EchoStar continues to develop and employ security measures to counter the illegal reception of DISH Network programming by FTA products.

- EchoStar is requiring that any Retailer selling or distributing any FTA product to immediately stop such practices. Failure to comply with this policy may lead to disciplinary action, including without limitation termination of your retailer agreement(s).

o How You Can Help to Combat FTA Piracy:

- If you have any information about FTA piracy, please contact us at signal.integrity@echostar.com. We need your cooperation. Please include the following necessary information in your email:

? The name of the offending business;

? Their phone number and/or address;

? Where you saw or heard about them; and

? What they are selling.

Its a dumb witch hunt.

Free To Air is LEGAL Dish.

Also remember that Echostar is the largest maker and provider in Europe, and also Echostar FTA equipment is considered one of the most hackable units made.

Hello Mr Pot... Meet Mr Kettle. :)

Also remember that Echostar is the largest maker and provider in Europe, and also Echostar FTA equipment is considered one of the most hackable units made.
That is irrelevant. Is that equipment legally available for sale in North America ? If not, then it doesn't matter if they make such equipment or not.

I know you want to support your installer and retailer friends, but you need a more valid argument than that.

I notice that FTA Direct, Sadoun, and Fortec, all big sponsors of this site, sell FTA equipment (and no, I have no intentions of reporting them).

If echostar wanted to end the piracy so bad, why point the finger versus upgrading the encryption method. Granted I don't know squat about what it would take, but if millions and millions are lost every year due to bootlegging then I'm certain it would be much cheaper and easier in the long run to simply up the encryption.

My brain is a spongebob, edumacate me.

Yes, FTA is legal in the US as long as it's legal FTA. Hacking is not legal. But what Dish is doing is banning the sale of legal equipment because they're afraid people will hack it. So they're screwing the people that install FTA legally.

I would say that this is more like if Sony mandated that any retailers that sell Sony music CDs not sell CDR burners. Sony manufactures CDR burners. There are legal uses for CDR burners (They are not all used for making illegal copies of Sony music CDs).

I wonder if the sponsors of this site will have to quit selling the FTA receivers and if Dish Network would shut them down (for selling Dish) if they continue to advertise on here and sell FTA. I imagine they are big retailers too which bring in lots of Dish Network customers. Maybe Dish Network does not care anymore since there are so many other retailers out there.

One could just open up another business that sells the FTA equipment to avoid the stipulation but Dish Network can void anybody's retailership with them for any and no reason.

bingo...and the people who buy the boxes for the legal purpose.

Dish should go after them selves and the company the produces Nagravision. If Dish was smart enough when they swapped cards WHEN IT WAS COMPROMISED ALREADY to actually switch to a more secure method we wouldn't have this issue

They can't shoot in own leg :) - NagraStar is owned by E* company and Kudelski, and responsible for implementation Nagravision's encryption include the cards and algos in IRD and uplink encoders.

If Dish sells out then they won't worry about it unless AT&T sues them after taking over for not taking care of the piracy problem.

Ooops, I have the ads blocked by AdBlock so I was looking at who/what was blocked at this site and Sadoun was listed.

I know I saw Fortec and Dish on the same page but maybe it was someone who sold Fortec equipment along with Dish service....

Hope you enjoyed pointing out my errors. Hehe, I know you did, actually.

Who knows, E* might have the same attitude as Microsoft.

"Every computer running pirated Windows is one less running linux"

"Every hacker stealing E* signal is one less subscriber of D* or cable"

Future Sat Plans?

Just got my 722 - couple questions.
