Never hurts to call.... Customer service will give me the ERIS for $269 - $100 mail-in rebate. Add in the $100 rebate (debit card) my wife is getting and I'd be out-of-pocket only $69.

Website currently says $469 for me since I'm not eligible until 12/10 and I'm the secondary number.

The secondary number makes no difference. Each phone has it's own contract and it's own upgrade plan.

Moto Droid or Eris?

I'm trying to decide between the Droid or Eris. The design of the Droid is the biggest drawback for me. I understand that the Droid has more features, but hopefully the Eris will get the update soon. Right now the Eris is 80.00 with 2 year contract. I'm leaning towards the Eris. Any recommendations?

I am biased, as I love the Droid, and from all accounts, once it gets 2.1 in the next couple weeks, it is going to be even faster - but I read two good reviews on PC Magazine of the Droid and the Droid Eris, and while they had good things to say about both, I think their conclusions about Moto Droid over Eris were pretty compelling.

The HTC Droid Eris is an attractive phone, and HTC Sense is a pleasantly glossy interface. But the incredible power of Motorola's Droid beats the Eris with its bigger screen, better multimedia abilities, and most importantly its much faster processor. I like this slim, refined touch-screen phone, but its multimedia problems are frustrating, and its processor just won't put as bright a shine on Android apps as the Motorola Droid's Cortex-A8 will.

Yes, the Droid Eris costs $100 less up front than the Motorola Droid. But if you look at the two phones' prices over two years, that difference vanishes: you're paying more than $2,000 anyway. Saving $100 to get a less-powerful Android phone is simply a false economy. This is a good device, but the Motorola Droid is a great one.

Once you have used the monster-sized brilliant screen on the droid in the real world (whether it is google maps while making your way through a big city; or bringing up detailed stats from ESPN while at a college basketball game; or just surfing the full-site of SatelliteGuys; or when you are debating buying something in Best Buy and you scan the barcode of the item only to find out it is $50 cheaper on Amazon.com, and can read all of the customer reviews of the product), you'll know you made the right choice.

Plus, within the month (hopefully next Friday!) the Droid will be running the same software (2.1) as the Google Nexus).

I have the HTC Hero which is almost the same devices as the Eris and I love it. I like it the most because it is a much smaller device overall. Your best bet is to just choose the device that appeals to you the most as you are the one that will be stuck with it for the next two years.

As for the 2.1 update on the Droid, I would bet that the Eris will also get the update soon. HTC and Sprint have already announced that the Hero will be getting the update as well.

To be honest I am surprised they did not introduce the Eris with 2.0. I still think there are some compelling arguments in the PC Mag review.

Samsung Omnia. Had it for about 8 months. Before that I was a Palm Treo guy for 3 years (although I went from a Palm 700 to a 755p). WinMobile and I just did not get along very well.

I have had Windows Mobile for about 4 years and they haven't made much improvement in the OS so I am done.

ramy- the biggest improvement in win mobile 5.0 ( circa 4 years ago), and 6.5 today is you don't need to reboot all the time. Other than that, you're right, not much else improved. More importantly, are the 3rd party skins and tab displays you can add to make the WM OS be very efficient. Most of my apps continue to work through the version changes which is nice.
