First Looks: The Verizon Motorola Droid

you cant really, i mean it does depend on area/network traffic and all that...this is what I care about, does it load pages at an acceptable time to me, are there hangups (freezing due to network clogs) or does the software freeze, and so far, teh droid has been preforming at the highest level for me in real world situations.

Agree, 100%. This thing is rock-solid. And performs without a hiccup.

I find all these speed tests to be quite subjective.
As Rocky said, it depends on what part of the country you are among other factors too.

One of my past times is to do some speed tests when I travel.

Another test you all may want to play with is to test your phone direct as well as when tethered (USB, not Bluetooth) to a laptop.

What I find is my goal with these speed tests is to load up sling player and use that as my streaming speed test. Not only is that my most taxing test, it is reality based. None of the speed test sites are reality based. You get your result from some volunteer non-standard, using a non-standard file run, at a server location that may or not be optimized.

Note- for those unfamiliar with the mobile sling application. You can turn on the network speed bit rate as you watch the content stream.
The downside with this speed test is that unless you are on a supported OS and have it installed, you can't use this. eg. iphone ( only wifi supported {legally}),

Speed tests are very subjective but it is nice to see how the rest of the areas compare to your location.

twidgit. I like it, its a very nice twitter widget.

edit:totally off subject...but that touch pro 2 looks like a sweet phone, I really like what it offers! (edit again: Mike NO I am not thinking of leaving the droid, I just in respect to don have been looking that phone up as he is really happy with it)) :)

Oh come on James, we know in 2 or 3 months you'll be off to something else, because that is what phone sluts do. :D :D ;)

Still loving my TP1 ;) Manilla 2.5 w/ WinMo 6.5.1 has really turned it into a brand new phone.

I would still have that phone today if verizon didnt gimp their touch pro....I LOVE touch flo 3d, and footprints and all that jazz, but I also use slacker radio everyday and the gps nav on the droid is the winner for me, if they get that then I would look at a touch pro 2, but right now this phone is sooo solid its amazing.

UHOH :) found some problems this weekend..

#1. after a battery pull my phone tells me my sd card has been ejected and I need to put one in, but thats not possible due to sd card location ( it does this quite a bit actually.)

#2. and this was a big one for me, my gps didnt work when I went to cleveland, I didnt take my car mount but thought will it really make that much of a difference? and it did I had the phone on my friends dash and NO gps, at all, google maps did the triangulation thing, battery pulls nothing resolved this, so my brother had his iphone and used it to get directions to the place we were going, but I didnt like that at all.

Other then that this phone is VERY solid and VERY highly rec. to anyone. still :)

Most of the time when I used the gps on my roadtrip, I did not have the windshield mount installed. Didn't have a problem with it. I think once or twice I had signal issues, but for very short periods of times.

Re #1, I have not pulled the battery, and have not had that problem. That said, I intend to buy a second battery soon, so I guess I will find out.

Since we are talking about limitationg.... My only criticism so far is that yesterday, when I got up the battery was basically dead, and it had only been off the charger for 17 hours (according to the battery info). I suspect it was syncing too frequently for email/ and messages on FB. I would think battery life should be better than that. I have been keeping the phone in the Multimedia dock most of the time when it is not on my belt.

whats weird is this, I really tried everything I could think of to get the gps working, and nothing. it was frustrating, and once I returned back to my car, and put it in the car dock, it fired right up, I will try it again later on..... about the battery, yesterday my battery was dead at 9:00 at night but I did watch some football off of gamecast...by the way the funny thing is this I took the droid this morning to verizon and they said the sd card thing wasnt right, they didnt have any in stock and they could replace it with a touch pro 2 or a droid eris, or a imagio....until they could get more droids in, I asked for a brand new droid not a refurb and he said they cant do that, oh well I will wait.

I'd want a new one too.

If your new to these insurance claims replacement phones or warranty replacement phones, they always give you a refurb to replace your broken device. Even DishNetwork does that when your DVR breaks. Heck, I just went through 3 VIP622's all with the same defect until the 4th one arrived that worked. When I had my XV6700 with Verizon, I had a screen region go dead so I couldn't touch on some of the links. I went through 2 refurbs with the same problem, finally went to the store and they exchanged with a refurb that worked.

The big problem with this policy is they have a device with a typical failure and most that get returned are for this problem. Then their refurb process checks out the phone according to a list SOP and it doesn't include something like dead screen areas and the phone will be put back into the system with that problem. The refurb process is full of flaws, but unfortunately, that's what you get. They do not repair phones. Too costly. They simply do software reloads and verify they work. Real hardware failures seem to sneak by.

Almost forgot, on my old XV6600 I had a bad battery pin and it would lose power. The gave me a replacement that had the exact same problem with the same weak spring battery connection. I put up with it for another month and then upgraded to the 6700 which an upgrade will get you a new product, not a refurb.

Another memory lane recall- My wife's Old Palm Treo had 3 replacements with refurbs, all with bad microphones. Seems that was a common issue with the Palm Treo.

Alright I lose my droid for a little bit until my store gets one in (I didn't want oone shipped as that gives me the weekend to play with the touch pro 2) oh well at least they aren't hassling me and even credited my account the twenty bucks for the invisible armor (shhhh I am not allowed to talk about that :) )

My droid got updated this morning. So far all I have noticed is that the turn on/turn off lock is now something you swish in a straight line, instead of a curved one like a rotary phone. I think this will keep the screen a bit cleaner. They also changed the clock on the unlock screen.

Haven't had time to find any other changes.

I miss the old unlock screen already :( Other than that looks about the same, though maybe a bit snapier. The Apps screen doesn't open up all the way anymore for me (bleech). Also I can't remember if I saw this before or not, but there's an option greyed out under Text to Speech to add voices. Maybe something better than the current speak and spell :)

FYI- Just got a new ad in the mail from Verizon-

Mot Droid is now $99
htc Droid [SIC] FREE

Wondered if this offer is local or wide spread.

Read the fine print. I found that online, and it said "with a new Verizon Wireless account." Not $99 for an existing user. :)
